Actually it's not. The media makes a big deal out of which celebrity backs which candidate, but to tell you the truth, there aren't many Americans who care which celebrity votes for whomever. The media tries to make it seem like we can't think for ourselves, that we would vote for someone because Oprah or someone else told us to! Celebrities also just pop up and conventions or run around with t-shirts representing the candidates. They don't actually follow them around campaigning for them. Although sometimes it sure doesn't feel like that's the truth! Truthfully, most of us find it hilarious that celebrities think what they believe in will affect how we common people vote.

Our politicians can also travel around and meet with people without national security. I could just imagine Jack Leighton touring around with Tommy Chong and Valerie Pringle. I can't understand why Americans think because a celeb likes a candidate it is a good candidate. Strange Phenomenon if you ask me. I just wish there was a good candidate in Canada to elect!

Hi cher913. I'm no authority on this question. But it seems to me, that, as popular as the celebrities are, they can actually get their fans to vote for a particular candidate. I think that is why candidates select a celebrity or 2 to back them up and bring in some extra votes. That's my 2 cents' worth. Take care.

you know, its not something that we have to have. i guess to some people who are too lazy to get up and see whats going on with their country, having a celebrity back a certain candidate eliminates the work for them. its like all those people who worship oprah, she wants barack and so they want barack. its part of the whole being sheeple thing i guess. i know that having a celebrity back a certain candidate doesnt do it for me. i mean, i like knowing that people that i like like george lopez and tom hanks are along the same trail of thinking as i am.

It's called "If You scratch my back,I'll Scratch Yours"! Publicity wise,It looks good for the wannabe politician to be seen sharing a stage with somebody who's already achieved some fame and can be recognised by the public..sort of a Halo effect..."who's that with [insert celeb wanting serious issues recognition here]?" "Ah,So THAT's what they look like-must be getting desperate for attention if they want to be followed by the Paparazi! "

I guess that candidates believe if a person's favorite star vouches for them, then that person will vote for them. I have never followed which star votes for whom, it really doesn't make a difference to me because the star is in a totally different tax bracket than I am, so who's elected affects them differently than it does the little people like me. I vote for who sound like they have the best solutions for the problems that affect me directly and people like me.
