I get so frustrated

with my son when he does his homework. He is not at all interested in school, and refuses to take his time to get his work done. He'd rather hurry through it, usually guessing at answers getting them all wrong. I don't accept this, I never have. I look over his work when he claims to be done with it, and I always hand it back pointing out the wrong answers, or just flat out telling him it's unacceptable and he needs to do it correctly. He will continue this for hours until the page is so destroyed from erasing it, that he's forced to take a zero on the assignment. He has spent the last hour working on a social studies assignment. He has 3 easy questions to answer, but has thus far done them all completely wrong. I told him twice that he was wrong, and he did it once more, but this time tried to squirrel it away without me checking. When I did check it was still quite wrong. I keep telling him he needs to take his time and do it correctly, it's not a game or a race. He began crying saying it's too hard. It's not too hard, he just doesn't want to take the time to get it done. All of his answers are in the text, but he's not reading through to find them. I'm quite upset right now, because I want him to do this right. How can I make him realize this is important and he needs to do it the correct way? How can I fix this nasty, stubborn habit of his?

Is he a reader? Does he like reading? Most of the time, when a child doesn't want to bother with getting things right they are having trouble reading or don't like to read. My daughter went through that with a couple hers. Those kids could have been A students, but hate to read! One has gone through one year of college and just quit because he says it's not for him. But that kid was a straight A student until he got in the 7th grade and met other students that didn't think it was cool to study. He did good in high school but could have been on the honor roll all the time. His youngest brother is in the 7th grade and was inducted into the Beta Club just a couple weeks ago. He says he doesn't like to read, either, but apparently he reads. But he also obtains knowledge easily. He went for years without his Mom knowing he was having problems seeing, all the while making straight A's. He told her he couldn't even see the blackboard. So he quickly was tested and has been wearing glasses or contacts ever since.

He does read a lot, and has never shown a problem when it comes to reading or seeing, but he's had problems with his grades since day 1. I think he's just being lazy and not trying.

Your son sounds like my 3rd grader. He makes homework take a lot longer than it needs to because he wants to just mark any answer and be done with it. I will be watching this discussion for some ideas myself.
