They get food stamps...but yet they can pay for "Rent to Own" furniture.....

This just doesn't make sense....Two big overstuffed couches...A huge 42 inch Flat Screen TV...and they still get food stamps... I would say the bill alone is like $400.00 a month... But...they don't have money for childcare.... I thought food stamps were for people who needed help financially...and having kids it is necessary...but I thought you had to have hardly any money coming in, in order to receive them... And they are getting help with their electric and gas bills through a low income program. But they are spending $400.00 a month on "Rent to Own" stuff.... I don't understand...something doesn't sound right...

I don't know much about food stamps either but would think that it was for people with very little money as well . I don't need food stamps yet would not be able to afford an extra 400 dollars a month on rent to own furniture . Second hand would be a lot cheaper and when you can't afford food in your house you don't go looking for brand new things let alone a 42 inch flat screen t.v . Not sure how these people are doing it but they certainly don't have their priorities straight . Having food in the house and having the electric bills pais would be much more important then a flat screen t.v . It always seems there is someone out there who knows how to screw the system and sounds like that is what these people are doing because there would be no way they couldn't afford groceries yet afford to buy luxuries and that is what they are spedning their money one LUXURIES . Must be nice to have someone else pay your bills and take from those that need it more , obviously they don't have much of a conscience because if they can afford this stuff then they can afford their own food and yet their are really people out there who need this help and are being refused for whatever reason because of people like this cheating the system . I have no respec whatsoever for people like this !!

I don't have a lot of money as we are a one income family and there are five of us living in the house and am a big fan of hand me downs or used . I know it is not within our budget for new but when you can't afford something you do with what you have or get something that is more in your price range and there are still a lot of nice things out there that others are willing to get rid of just to get something new . So it is possible to get nice things even if they are not new :)

And you are right !! There was a time when we really needed money and were not able to get any help because of all those out there scamming the system , it took me landing in the hospital and a doctor forcing them to help us before we recieved any help at all and this was all because of people abusing the system . My husbands sister is a prime example of this and it irks me all the time to know she is getting away with it .

I agree with you..It isn't right to have luxuries when you can't afford food...They don't have their priorities straight, that is for sure... I love second hand stuff...It fits my budget and it works for me..I am a happy camper that way... It irks me to think that those that need it can't get it and those that don't can get it...It doesn't make sense...

They sound like they have become "professional Welfare rats". I hate people that abuse the system like that. And the people that REALLY need the assistance are the ones that get turned away! Go figure!

The old food stamp system worked that way and it was abused. I believe they have moved to specific coupons for specific items now, or at least that is what I have observed here in our state. I have had to wait in line several times because they picked up the "wrong" item and it wouldn't go through as free so would have to wait for cashier to call someone to go get the right thing. They should have a specific line at the grocery store for food stamps!

It does seem like the ones who need it have to jump through hoops to get it and then don't get it anyway...It will come back to bite them in the end though.. I am so honest it hurts....I like it that way though..I can't even begin to think that I would lie inorder to get stuff.... Later PPP...

My young daughter is on medicaid and there have been times that when she took her little daughter to the doctor that she found out the medicaid had been cancelled. The medicaid would need all of the information all over again to get it back again. And then food stamps, they wouldn't even let her have any food stamps for her and her baby because she lives with her grandmother. I guess they expected the grandmother to feed her. And she did but food stamps sure would have helped during that time. I know a woman that got $600 worth of food stamps and bought groceries for other people and then they paid her back in cash. Disgusting?

Well that is sad... I know here they count payments on a car like it is a utility bill. So if you are making car payments, you would actually get more FS. So I don't understand your case. Someone wasn't paying attention to your needs then.

I doubt they are paying that much a month for rental. I had a complete bedroom set, couch and dryer on rental and paid much less. As for the food stamp issue most people don't receive enough to get them completely through the month even going to the cheap stores and being careful with food purchases. Many working have them to make food ends meet. Another poster commented on the reactions of people when they know you are on any kind of assistance. This attitude often comes from the ones who are giving them the assistance.

Honestly, I know many people that lie to get assistance. The ones that are doing it to get a better life im like ok the gov. is full of it anyways why not. But the ones who are sitting on thier buts doing nothing but having kid after kid im like na they should put them to work. I understand many people cant find a job right now but those that dont even look and their not even going to school. No i dont care for them. We grew up with my mom raising us 3 kids on her own because my father was in prison for beating us. My mom worked 3 jobs to get by and never saw us, not because she wanted that but she went to get help and they told her she made 50 to much so she got another job which made 3. We lived in a small apt, never had groceries my sister made my brother and i go house to house asking for food lol its funny now. What im trying to get at is i agree with most of those comments yes we dont know what each person goes through or if they just have luck and someone buys them crap all the time. No we shouldnt abuse the system but the system abuses us. Now that im older i see that and i say if your going to lie to get a little help make it worth it go to school get a better job so you dont have to be doing that forever. But if your doing it just because you dont want to work and take care of your kids you will one day get what is coming to you. I hated the system for the longest because i never thought it was fair even now i work min 50hrs a week go to school pay for my own school and i see people sitting their free education not working food stamps i do get jelous but i have extra money in my pocket that they dont im not rich but i can buy my own crap. Use the system if it will help you get a better life soon dont if your lazy.

Ok I am a cashier at a grocery store. I have read all the comments above and just wanted to put in my opinion. Yesterday drove me to fight back tears as I sat and watched and waited on several people with EBT. First of all I am not talking about ALL people that use them, but most. THey dont say hello..they come thru with huge overloaded carts..sometimes 2 at once. They have 3 kids and one on the way (stop having kids while Im working minimum wage to feed the ones you have) PLEASE!! THey should include birth control on the foodstamps. THey keep having more kids...whats that about? It should be mandatory that they not be allowed to have more kids while on welfare or they get kicked off..THEN they pay for the groceries on EBT and then WHIP out their 100.00 BILLS yes I mean that to pay for their booze and cigerettes..It makes my actually sick. I have to be nice..and believe me its hard. Then you have the couple that comes thru with 2 orders and they use 2 EBT cards to pay and you KNOW they're living together!! IT needs to stop. My husband and I ran our own business and because of this kind of crap the economy took a dive and lost everything and Im working 40 hours a week at minimum wage to pay for these people. Then they look at me like arent you going to load my cart too?...Really people wake up. We applied because we really need it and guess what we got?...SIXTEEN DOLLARS A MONTH yes 16 lousy dollars a month!! We cant eat lobster and shrimp and steak like these fat A..... get. We're lucky to buy rice. We are middle aged and thats too bad... We cant keep having children to get more money from the state....so those of you that take advantage..think of someone besides yourselves...you should be ASHAMED!!!

feona they would not even get foodstamps if they were paying out 400 dollars anywhere as you have to put down everything you pay out down to every red cent. do not begrudge poor people who get foodstamps, its hard enough for them to have to have people looking down their noses at people with food stamps.dont be so unkind. You have no proof of what they are paying on rent to owhn stuff. leave them alone as they are probably hurting enough without your scorn.

Hi Hatley... I am not putting anyone down....and I am not begrudging anyone that gets foodstamps....Alot of people really need them...and I am really glad that they can get them to help their families.... I don't look down on people who need to get this kind of help..If I needed it I would go apply.. I am not unkind... I do know what they are paying because she told me...so I was just trying to figure it out... I'm sorry you felt you had to be rude to me....your opinion counts..but please don't accuse me of things that aren't true... I have taken care of kids whose parents get assistance...There is absolutely no reason for me to look down on them...I am glad it is there for them...

Hatley haven't you ever heard of lying and deceiving. There are many people who knows how to work the system to get what they want. There are women who are married, but when they fill out the food stamp application they put that they do not know where their husband is, but he is still living with them and working. They have things put in other people's name, so when their assets are checked it is not revealed. It is not scorn, it is reality, some people will go to any length to scam the system, and the bad part about it is they can get away with it. I was separated from my husband and had a young child, all I wanted was some food stamps so that I could feed my child, I was denied, I was honest and let them know that I was working, but my pay was not enough for child care, rent, utilities, food, medicine etc. All I wanted was a little help in order to stretch my dollar. There are people who make a living scamming the system. If these people were in a financial bind that they needed food stamps a flat screen TV, is not a NEED. The system sucks, those who need can not get and those who don't always seems to get. I am a situation right now, that I could use some assistance, but I am not eligible. I was laid off from my job, my husband is not making that much, and the bills are piling up, but who cares, yeah, it is my problem, but I do not appreciate the tax money the government took from me, going to someone who do not need it, and if you can get a flat screen TV, you do not need assistance, because if you did, you would use that money you are spending on the TV to buy food for you family.

I would think that they are cheating the government. I've seen people do it and i've heard of people doing it. It's unfair especially to those who actually use such programs because they need it. I've been through hard times myself and haven't even used food stamps and other government assistant programs..mostly because i got help from family members and my situation was only temporary. Honestly i think you should do the right thing and call family services and report them for fraud. You can remain annonymous. More than likely they will be investigated and prosecuted... The government doesn't take fraud lightly and they could end up going to prison..in my opinion they deserve it. If they can afford rent to own items then they dont need assistance.

@Feona1962 I am repulsed by the judgemental comments made out of ignorance. Im sure the people on food stamps would love to trade places with you Fiona. First of all rent to own furniture is sometimes the ONLY option for poor. Payments are nowhere near 400 per month. That's a figure you invented yourself. Try closer to around 50 per month. Low income are not known for having access to credit cards. Do you think they have enough cash to buy furniture? Rent to own furniture stores commonly offer no money down, free delivery, and no payments the first month. Low income families often have to resort to this in order to to have any furniture. I get so angry at people like you who spread this stupidity and hatred towards low incomhe based off a clueless idea you came up with in your head. I don't care if the t.v and couch were covered in GOLD! These stores often offer nicer furniture cheaper if it was previously owned. What is your problem with a family trying to provide some normalcy to their childrens lives? Are you that miserable and snotty that you feel the children should sit on the floor and grow up to be known as the poor kids? Kids are cruel to children, it seems to me they pick it up from ignorant parents such as yourself. Food stamps are given to people who work, or were recently laid off. Food stamps ARE NOT A HAND OUT!!!!!!!!! These people work like you and me, they unfortunately have employers that grossly underpay them. You are barking up the wrong tree. The employers are able to have great lifestyles by forcing tax payers to compensate for the income that they are to greedy to pay. If you feel it isn't fair that they get help and you don't then may I suggest you trade places with them. Im sure they would be more than happy to receive the income you do, its obviously more if you are unable to qualify for help[. You and your children can have the luxury of being victimized and chastised by starangers who would rather judge than attem[pt to understand. How about turning your anger towards corporate welfare instead? Every person on here with negative COMMENTS SHOULD BE ASHAMED of yourself and embarrassed and your ignorant comments!!!! You all sound like the greedy ones, complaining of how little you have when obviously so have much more than those you complain about. These are people with value, people with innocent children, I guess you would be happy for the kids to go hungry and sleep on a floor so you can have some sense of satisfaction. Take a look at your life and fix it, the preoccupation with others and personal details of their lives clearly show theres something lacking in yours! I feel sorry for you.

How the "system" works, Feona, often does not make sense, but there are many people out there who have become experts in working it. I can think of a couple of ways these people might be able to pull off what seems impossible. One option is Section 8 housing where the tenants often are required to pay a small fraction of their income towards their rent. This would leave them with enough money to afford to rent such lavish furnishings. I used to be on Section 8 some years ago myself, and, yes, I was able to afford to rent living room furniture(no big screen TVs though). There are other programs such as subsidized energy programs for low income people also. It does not always seem fair to those who are struggling to make ends meet, but that is the way the system works these days.
@Foxxee (3651)

20 Sep 08
Well they probably are on Section 8 the more I think about this... because how else would this situation work? But with that said, being on Section 8 does help with rent && I'm sure that leaves them with extra money since they are also on FS. So, yeah I can now see how they are able to get rent to own stuff. But $400 a month is crazy high! I would of stocked up on food! Because FS doesn't even last the whole month for some families. Hmmm... makes you think now... LOL! But heck, if they get help with Section 8 && are on FS, then there is nothing wrong with that. ALl that is based on income && whatever the state figured out is on the state. They seem to be off about $200 in this case... because they usually work around income && other bills && leave some amount for other living situations. But I am still wondering how they get Section 8 && FS, plus have an extra $400... :)

If they can pay for Rent to Own crap. They can pay for childcare as well as food. These people disgust me and when a person that really needs to be on some sort of assistance needs it. Most of the time they don't get it. I know the struggle that it is to get assistance and it sucks to say the least. ROFL! I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at this... I'm all for not judging people on FS && feel they have as much rights as anyone && should be able to do whatever with their extra money since it is based on income... But... I must say that RENT TO OWN isn't cheap! It actually cost more money in the long run then to just go out && buy the item. You have to add it up && you will see... RENT TO OWN is for people who just don't have the full amount of money up front && this option gives them a payment plan. But in the long run, your spending so much more doing the rent to own. Sure when you here you only have to pay $75 or so a month for a laptop or a TV, at the time, that sounds really good. But the truth is, it's not a good deal. Add that up... it takes longer then a year at times, maybe more to pay off on just a lap top that you are paying $70 a month for... so in the long run... not cheap... && someone with money problems should stay clear...

Feona dear I think the keywords here are "Rent to own" which means they do not own the furniture. They may even drive a new car but if it too is a "Rent to own" that's Okay. They can still get assistance. And the more they owe the more assistance they can get after all these are items they can not live without. That's how this government assisted program works. You can't own it but you can rent it...They can apply for housing assistance and live in a nice neighborhood even in a house with a pool and pay very little rent but only if the owner has put it up as a section 8 house. The owner gets the other part of what the normal rent would be from the government so they don't lose any money and it's a sure way to know that the money will always arrive on time. The section 8 renter has to pay the rent to the housing assistant program and they in turn pay the owner. It may not sound right but that's how it works.

OOps I forgot to add they no longer issue food stamps. It is now a card that looks and is used like a debit card or gift card, You can't tell by looking at it that it is anything less than a credit card. This was to keep people from being embarrassed when using food assistance.

I would say it is wrong. If I were on welfare, and I needed a Tv, I would get an old twenty one inch set, and a digital converter. I would then go down to my second hand store and get one from there, or buy a basic one from a furniture store and I would be more interested in bunk bed for the kids plus a kitchen table. I would not spend $400 a month on charges just to look nice. If I were to use a rent to own, I would look for the most economical furniture, but I would not do it because well the cost is way too high. No wonder they are on welfare. Say how did they get that way anyway and who was the idiots who approved them?

I work very hard to keep afloat. I do know that "rent to own" places are costly but they gear their payment plan to target the poor...those that could not afford to just buy the stuff. I had a friend that furnished her entire apt. thru one of these places. She, too, was on welfare. Thing is...she could NOT afford it and often times, they'd come and take everything away and she and her children had nothing at all. She was not scamming the system and her reasons for being on welfare were legit. She was given a certain amount of cash each month to cover her expenses. Granted, going thru the rent to buy system was poor judgement...she just really wanted to provide for her family and to her it seemed the way to go. In the end, she finally realized it was best to look for 2nd hand things and maybe accept not so pretty things from friends and family. I do know that there are people out there that scam the system all the time. It does make me angry. But most of those people don't need to go to rental places becuz they are making out fine enough to just buy the things they want. If this lady is scamming the system, she will sooner or later get caught. I don't know...lots goes on that I really don't like. I just try to keep my own little world in order and spread happiness and peace. If others are doing wrong, it will come back to bite them somewhere, somehow. I have when I was younger, wrongly judged others and felt terrible later...I've learned over time that it is best to just not go there.
