How old was your baby when you started feeding them baby food?

It's been so long since I had a little one. I have so many questions! My foter son is 6 weeks old and weighs 12.3 pounds. He drinks 6 ounces of formula every 5 hours and still acts like he is hungry. When can I start feeding him some baby cereal?

The current guidelines are to hold off on solids until 6 months (and other developmental milestones are reached). I don't remember the specifics on the frequency of formula feeding but I think for a 6 week old it should still be every 3-4 hours with night time feeding being spaced out to 4-6 hours. Cereal in a bottle to thicken formula is now considered a choking hazard. Solid foods before 6 months are believed to cause an increased risk of digestive problems (colic, constipation), food allergies, and childhood obesity.

You're very welcome! The guidelines seem to change so fast. When my oldest was born just less than 13 years ago, her doctor acted as though I was neglecting her because I hadn't started her on cereal by her 6 week check-up. With my youngest, he was closer to 7 months before it became even close to a regular event and his doctor commented that he was doing great and obviously just didn't need the "extra" food yet.

My daughters pediatrician advised us to give feed out baby solids when she was 6 months old... because that way she will be able to avoid getting allergic to some type of foods... and i think when i have another baby... i will also give him/her solid food during that stage...

I remember feeding my daughter at that age every 3 to 4 hours. It depends on how many ounces she could finnish. Try to wait a little while until he is 5 months old and start feeding solid. I fed my daughter when she was 5 mos old. I used to cook chicken soup, mashed the vegetable and feed her. She doesn't like cereals soo much so I have to prepare food for her. You can mashed carrots, potatoes, and other vegetables for her but make sure that it is really really soft so as not to choke him.Goodluck on the new baby !

Thank you for the advice. I had planned on making my own baby food when it is time. I just didn't know when that would be. LOL

I wouldnt say 6oz every 5 hours is very much he should be feeding at least every 4 hours and through the night too. if he is hungry id add an extra feed in the day or increase the formula by an oz but if he cant drink more in one go adding an extra feed in the day would be the better option. x

I don't have a child and I don't know when my mom started feeding me baby food but I do know that she didn't feed me gerber or things like that. She would take fresh vegetables and put them in the blender and then feed it to me. It was a lot healthier.

That's what I planned on doing once he is ready. We don't eat canned or boxed foods in our house. EVERYTHING is made from scratch. Even the bread, butter and sour cream.

We started feeding our boys rice cereal at four months old. Your baby should probably be eating every three to four hours.

I don't remember exactly with my son, but it was around 3 months. He started on rice cereal because he was hungry ALL THE TIME. My daughter was 3 months when she started with rice cereal and 4 months when she started eating carrots and sweet potatoes. That is considered really early anymore, but she had GERD's and the more solid food she ate the less she spit up. She was eating off of a spoon at a VERY young age.

If he still seems hungry, feed him more often. At that age my son was eating about every 3 hours during the day and going about 6 hours at night. It is usually recommended to wait until 4 months to start solid foods. That's when I started. I gave him a little rice cereal, then added veggies one new one about every week. Even when he starts solids, formula should be his primary source of nutrition until he is about 6-8 months old.

Well, first I would like to say that every baby is different and mostly ever mother is different. I think, it was so long ago, that I started feeding my son baby cereal when he was about 6 weeks old, and my daughter about 10 weeks old. She was a bit slower than he was because she was quite a bit smaller. My son actually started eating baby cereal when he was still in the hospital. They started putting it in his milk, thinly, because he was a very hungry baby. But when I took him home I didn't continue to feed it to him till he was about 6 weeks old and then I started putting some in his bottle and made the whole in the nipple a little bit bigger. But like I said, ever child is different and you will know when he is still hungry right after he just got fed his milk. 6 ounces every 5 hours is not much so don't worry about it too much. I remember my kids had to be fed about every 2 1/2 hours so maybe you should be feeding him more often, not necessarily start him on cereal. Alrighty then, talk to you later my friend, Have a good mylotting day, Chris

Then I have a while to go before I start worrying about it.
