How do I Stop Her From Doing This?

September 9, 2008 7:26pm CST
My sisters' dog is a pitbull. She's 11 years old this month. She has NEVER EVER urinated anywhere in my sisters old house but when my sis moved in with me the dog started peeing on my couch. She will lay down and just pee. And she won't get up when she does it and she also tries to hide it by licking it up. Can anyone tell me why she's doing this and maybe some way to stop her?

Is she afraid of you or of any other thing? Make sure that you ll get her out for a small walk to stop her urinating inside.

I let her out for an hour in the morning and about 6-7 hours at night. I have a fenced in yard so I can do this. She really should have no reason to be using the bathroom in the house. She sleeps next to me and I have never hurt her so she has no reason to fear me.

This is usually caused by a UTI, incontinence, or a late onset of diabetes. A urinalysis will show what is going on. If blood and bacteria are present, it is a UTI that can be cleared up by oral antibiotics. If it is caused by diabetes, there will be a large amount of glucose in the urine. If neither of these show up, it is either a behavioral problem or incontinence. Incontinence can be helped by giving phenylpropanolamine (aka proin). Your best bet is to see the vet and get a physical exam. :)

Most likely it's a medical problem, not a behavior problem. Stress from the move could have weakened her immune system and she may have a bladder infection or it's possible that at her age she just cannot control it. The vet can prescribe medication (I think it's called Proin) to help with incontinence, however she should have some tests done to make sure it's not an infection.

Maybe she is too old to be able to control her urinate so she tried to hide her mistaken by eating it. Since your dog is still new with the new house, try to bring her to her new toilet every time she seems to make a pee or something else. After that praise her that how good she was to pee in the right place just like when you teach a puppy. But if your dog still can't control her urinated then she must have something wrong with her health now since she is already old by her age. Hurry take your dog to the pet clinic and let the vet take care the problem for you.
