I would like to hear your opinion on the question: Do you think God intended man and woman to be equal beings? My father keeps on telling me to accept the double standards imposed on women in society. He said that it had been that way since Jesus time and it will be that way for all of our lifetimes. I do not agree with him and I have actually been paying close attention to Theology and Philosophy regarding man and woman's equality. I would like to hear more views regarding the matter and I would like to listen to yours. Hope you have fun and learn in this discussion.

Personally, I DO think God intended men and women to be equal. He didn't make Eve from a bone in Adam's head so that she could tower above him, he didn't make her from a foot bone to be stepped on by him, she was made from a rib bone so that she could stand side by side with her partner in life, and be his equal.

I like that interpretation. Did you came up with it on your own? If you can suggest any thing that I can read up on regarding that interpretation, I will very much appreciate it.

I don't know where that came from. I am sure I didn't make it up myself. I may have heard it somewhere a long time ago.

I, don`t think God intend men and women to be equal. The very fact that women are physically not strong as men proves this point. Secondly, god has given different emotions to men and women, men have less tolerence power as compared to women. Ila rathore.

Hi oyenkai...every issues base on gender has become very contentious as women also started raising their voices which has become more pronounce during 20th & this early 21st century. And in my opinion , "yes", they are both intended to be equal & are mean to be interdependent but there are some fields where women are more superior than men & while in some other men are superior and both have to accept this,& there are are no such things that men can absolutely dominate over women as some macho-men thinks , as this is 21st century time will prove itself.

Actually, if you look at most cultures represented in the Bible, the women were NOT equal to men. One place in the Bible even states that women were not supposed to speak while in the temple. Imagine church today if the women didn't say anything. I also believe that it states somewhere that women were not supposed to be a teacher of any sort or hold any official positions in the church. From the way it seems, especially in the old testament, women were meant to clean, cook, and have babies. They were to support the men...to serve...that is all...Doesn't sound like much equality to me. A woman's role is clearly defined, as is the role of the man. For the most part, women did not work outside the home. I am sure they probably helped with harvesting crops or gathering food or whatever, but the majority of work was done by men. The men were responsible for the financial well-being of the family. Looking at some of the men I see around today, I would be scared to know they were responsible for too much of anything. I am a man, and I would love for my wife to be able to stay home and not have to work, but I know that we can't afford that. I would also hate to know that didn't have any real job skills to fall back on if I became disabled and unable to work. It is hard enough for us to make it with BOTH of us working. I believe in woman's rights and all that stuff. I have a good wife. She makes good decisions most of the time, and I would be lost without her. It is nice not to have to worry about EVERYTHING myself. She was a single mom with a house and everything when we got together, so she was pretty well established on her own. When we got married and I moved in, I didn't try to change most of what she had established. For the most part, I let her keep handling the stuff she was already doing. I started trying to help where she needed me too, and it has seemed to work well so far. We have been married almost eight years. It hasn't all been fun, but we are still together.

One of the big problems in something like this is too many people trying to live in a third stage world using first and second stage information. From Adam to Noah was the first stage. From Noah to Jesus was the second stage. From Jesus to now is the third stage. The information we need to live in this third stage of this world is in the new Testament. When you start trying to combine the information from all three stages it just confuses people. I'm sure you have heard people say the Bible contradicts it's self. This is where this comes from. God has simply made changes and some information no longer applies in today's world. Right now we need to concentrate on what Jesus taught. None of us are smart enough to go through the old bible and sort out what applies today and what doesn't. It is better to just leave the past in the past and do our best to live our lives by what Jesus taught. Jesus has already sorted it out for us and He did not leave anything out.

I believe that the Bible did not intend to evangelize the same social standing that women had in that era. It was merely stating that that was how it was then. My question was God's intention and not the sociology in the Bible. There are many other things that were written in the Bible but are no longer applicable in our time because they already lack their symbolism - like not eating pork for example. As for the women's social standing then, it was due to the lack of foresight from the men of their time who wanted an "other" to make themselves superior. I don't think God *intended* that - which is actually my question from the start. Thank you for your opinion, I'm having loads of fun and I'm learning a lot from your different perspectives.

Let me rephrase that if I am correct. Does that mean that if a man and a woman prays to God, who will God hear first or answer first? Or does God has preference on any one? I don't think God is like that. But it depends on the equality that anyone now is thinking. Do you think if men is created to work outside the field, and women are created to tend to the babies at home, then women are preferred because they have lighter tasks. We are all equal in the eyes of God in terms of being his creations but men and women were created uniquely from each other. The strength of men can be the weakness of women but it can also be viewed vice versa. The strength of women is definitely the weakness of men.

I get your point, If the man will leave the house to work and earn something for food of the family, while the woman will stay in the house to tend for the babies. The question is , who is the slave between the two? Isn't it hard to equate the word equal?. Even the word superior is a question. Look , the man says, stay in the house for i am going to work since I am more superior to you. The man that work for food, or the woman who just srays in the house is the slave? I myself dont know who. Well, looks like life is a very confusing sometimes.

In Jesus times, the society is being influence by those high priest. They didn't believe in Jesus. Don't get cynical about it. God isn't unfair. He create everyone equal. Always remember that God create man with his own image and likeness, that alone is one proof that every one is created equal. Only the society change it views towards it.

from my point of view as creation story is telling us, man was first created and later on, the woman came to existence out from one of the ribs of adam. let me first state what is the purpose of her existence according to the word written in the bible, primarily she will be a help meet,a wife, and after the fall as part of the sin consequences his husband will rule over him. this practice is still so much practice among the other fundamentalist religion and races giving less value on the side of the woman, however though man is superior by nature and woman as inferior, the shift of womens role in the history of the bible moves dramatically specially in the dawning of the new testament in which their participation, contribution and exposure draws so much attention specially in the history of man's salvation through the birth of the Lord Jesus by Mary. these turn of events has made woman on a prime position along with man at least at the age of the church up to this point of time which we call modern times..again there are still religions and people having these practice of downgrading a woman which i believe is not what God's intention when He created Eve to be a help meet of Adam.....i hope i did address your issue.
