What was the first ever J-Dorama you watched?

Mine was Gokusen (the original series, the one with MatsuJun in it), back when it was airing on a local channel. Of course, I've always been an anime fan, moreso before I discovered my current fandom (i.e. NEWS) so I was excited to see it in live action. Of course, before that, I saw the live action movie of Prince of Tennis so you could say I had a thing for anime-based live action series back then. So yes, I watched it, got baited into it by MatsuJun and Nakama Yukie (who I still can't reconcile her role as Sadako of "The Ring" fame), and well, the rest is history. How about you? What was the first ever J-Dorama you watched and how did you discover it?

hi nekonyata! i've watched the first Gokusen series too and the live action Prince of Tennis. i love both of them. and yeah, Matsumoto Jun is definitely hot! and Yankumi is so funny. but she was so serious in Tokyo Wankei. i'm currently watching her series Trick. i was surprised when i learned that she played Sadako. ^__^;; hmmm.. its hard to remember what was the first J-dorama i've watched because i've watched too many! but i think it would be the live action Sailormoon. ^__^;; i am a super dooper big fan of the anime but before i didn't really wanna watch the live action. it seemed too corny and cheesy for me. but i've read a lot of nice comments about it so i decided to check it out at crunchy. there was indeed a lot of cheesiness ^__^;; but still, i enjoyed watching it! the special effects were great and Usagi wasn't such a crybaby there. only a little. ^__^;; and then after that, i started watching a lot of Japanese dramas. usually recommended by a friend. but later on i was checking a lot of other dramas by myself.

MatsuJun = j-drama/JE/Arashi-bait. *lol* I haven't seen Tokyo Wankei but I really like most of Nakama Yukie's dramas so I'll have to look around for that. Really? You watched the live action Sailormoon? How was it? I think Shirota Yuu was in the musicals too as Tuxedo Kamen. =) And yes, I love how I could easily connect fandoms like that. =)

Tokyo Wankei is a nice drama. you can watch it over at crunchyroll. Trick is also nice too. it has a lot of comedy and suspense. Head Teacher Sawatari is also there! the two of them will surely make you laugh. you can watch trick at mysoju.com. the live action Sailormoon was okay. it was shorter than the anime. and you'll be amazed at the..whatchamacallit.. the moves when transforming and casting their powers. its cheesy but its good. you'll like the series if you are a fan of the genre. i didn't know Yuu was in the musical! i didn't check out the musicals. i kinda thought the performers were a bit fat. or maybe its all in the costume.

*lol* I guess I'd give the Sailor Moon live action series a shot. I only saw bits and pieces of the musical, though, particularly the bits Shirota was in. I was such a fan of Sailor Moon as a kid, I'd go watch the live action series now for nostalgia's sake.

It's definitely Gokusen 1 (thanks, GMA 7 :) I liked it because of Matsujun so I searched for his other dramas, until it lead me to...jdrama :D Right now, I'm a Jdrama fanatic, especially the ones Arashi starred in. I also like manga adaptations such as Nodame Cantabile, HanaKimi and Mei-chan no Shitsuji.

Hi there. Well, Gokusen is, I think, the first J-Drama shown on local TV which was actually marketed well enough to get people watching it. And yes, thanks a lot to GMA 7, Filipinos would be introduced to a few other series like Nobuta wo Produce, Proposal Daisakusen and Nodame Cantabile -- or, at least, that's what I've been gathering from the various JE/NEWS-related Live Journal communities I'm part of since I haven't been able to watch TV as much I would want to lately. Nodame and HanaKimi were extremely funny, though I haven't gotten down to watching Mei-chan no Shitsuji.

*lol* I know Mizushima Hiro from Hana Kimi. If I remember correctly, he's married to the singer Ayaka, right?

Mei-chan no shitsuji doesn't really have any JE, but Matsujun-seemingly-look-alike Mizushima Hiro is one of the protagonist :D

I've read there was going to be an adaptation of a manga I liked very much so I decided to give it a try;) My first j-dorama was Hanazakari no Kimitachi e which I watched last year. At first I was surprised to see that japanese live-action series are made with the same manner that anime but I got used to it after a while and it was so funny I could's stop watching Hana Kimi Ikemen Paradise:P It's different from manga but manga has 20+ volumes that couldn't be squished into 11 episodes.

I've never watched Japanese Drama. I think it's because I see them in the local television channels, dubbed in Filipino and I fail to be interested :P It's mostly their lack of acting skills (in my opinion) - they're so reserved when it comes to acting, unlike Koreans who are very expressive and who have very interesting Romantic Comedies :D I think I should give it a chance though. What funny series would you recommend? Thanks for the response on my discussion!

*lol* I understand how Filipino dubbing could be quite a turn off. I prefer to watch any foreign-language drama/series with subtitles. Hmm, well, if we're talking about funny series, I'd say Hana Kimi, Yamada Tarou Monogatari and Nodame Cantabile would be good starting points. I think all of these series have been or will be shown on GMA 7 but I strongly suggest getting the subtitled versions instead.

My first ever Jdorama is Gokusen 1 (with Matsumoto Jun) just like you. It was all thanks to GMA who introduced a lot of Jdoramas here in the Philippines. But i was really hooked into JE because of Hana Kimi's Nakatsu (Ikuta Toma). Soon, we can already see in local channel Ryo-chan as well as Yamapi and Kame because of Nobuta and Pro Dai. I'm so excited already!

Yeah, a huge thanks to . I'm quite worried about the Filipino dubbing but, on the whole, I guess I'm all for j-dramas being exposed to the Filipino public. There have been lots of adverse opinions on j-dramas being shown on local TV, though, particularly on LJ. I'm in favor of it, though, since I have this (far-fetched) notion that maybe, if Pi or Ryo become popular enough, the GMA execs could arrange for NEWS to come to the Philippines... or something. Until that happens, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
