I just came face to face with a mouse... literally! How would you handle that?

As I was typing a response to another post here, I noticed something move behind my monitor. I looked closer and saw that a mouse had climbed up onto my desk and just stood there, looking at me from about 2 feet away. I actually got brave enough to bring my head down so see under the monitor and he didn't budge! He just kept looking at me. Okay, this is freaking me out now... as I'm typing this, he came back, had another look around, then climbed down the monitor wire again. After freaking the first time, I got my cat to come in and have a look around. He didn't find anything so I assumed that the mouse had left. But he just came back!!! Ahhhhhhhhh! I know that living in the country you're going to have things like this happen, especially when it rains a lot or it gets cooler outside. I just didn't realize how gutsy country mice are!!! I'm trying to catch him so I can 'relocate' him... VERY far away from my home. How would you handle this? I might be able to use your idea. Help!!!!!!!!

Since you have a cat, I assume you have at least one cat carrier. Sit the carrier on your desk near the monitor, open the door on the carrier, place some food inside. The first day or 2 he will eat the food & scurry off. After a few days he will feel safe & not hurry off. With a little luck, you will see him inside & can shut the door. The grill on mine is small enough he shouldn't be able to get out until you get him where you're going with him. Then just turn him loose & hope he don't beat you home!!!

We got him! I had put a flat sticky trap made for flies down on my computer desk right where the mouse had been climbing up the cord. It didn't take long before he was stuck. We took him outside and, with the advice of my son, used cooking oil and cotton swabs to release the mouse from the trap. It worked great! We took him across the road before we did this and he ran off towards the farm over there. Plenty of nice, warm barns and plenty of food. Hopefully, he'll stay over there!

CONGRATULATIONS & Good Luck on him not coming back. Have you found where he was nesting & what he was eating at your house??? I've seen the sticky paper for mice but always thought it to be cruel. Never thought of using oil to release them from it. You must be a good woman to release a mouse!!! You've raised a good son too!!!!!!

He wasn't here long enough to nest anywhere... at least, not to my knowledge. It was raining and kinda chilly all day the day before, so I think he came in that night. My cat was playing with 'something' that night but I couldn't see what it was. It might have been the mouse. So, at the most, he was only here since the night before. That's why I was determined to get him outta here before he had the chance to settle in and raise a family! So far, I haven't seen any more mice. I'm planning on buying some of those humane traps just in case this happens again. I wasn't thrilled with getting so close to that little fella when trying to get him off that sticky trap! He didn't seem upset by it, though... weird! He just kinda sat there, looking around until we got him free. He jumped off the trap and sat there in the grass for a moment or two, then hightailed over to the farm. (He was probably wondering, "What the HeII just happened here???")

If you want to save the mouse I would try to catch him. You might be able to find a trap that won't kill the mouse. I had a friend who lived in LA of all places and they had a mouse problem due to a cat door they had. We just caught the mouse in something like a bowl trapped it and then let him loose.

Hmmm, bowl! I have a large (metal) mesh strainer that might work! We have a doggie door, but you may as well say it's a cat door because my dogs weigh less than my cat! It's a very small door, but large enough for a mouse to get through! That's probably how it came in. Okie dokie. I'm off to get that strainer and keep it beside me. Thanks so much for the idea! If I catch it, I'll take it most likely to the farm across the road. He'd have plenty to eat and plenty of nice, warm places to set up house.

Thanks, Damien. I had bought some flat sticky traps for flys, so I put one down on the desk where the mouse was climbing up the cord. He got caught! We took him across the road towards a farmhouse, used some cooking oil to release him from the trap (it really works!) and he scampered off towards the farm. There are plenty of barns over there so, hopefully, he'll make a new home in one of them.

My computer is in my home office. I haven't seen a mouse here since we moved in last year until now. Maybe there were none last year because it was so dry last summer and we went through quite a drought. The mice probably went looking for a better place to live. But now that this summer has been more on the normal side, the mice are probably coming back. I've had to deal with field mice off and on most of my life, coming in every fall when it starts getting colder outside. It rained yesterday, all day, which is probably why the mouse came in now. I'd rather have the mouse in a work building than in my home! Then it would be someone else's problem. LOL

You're a lot braver than I am! I doubt I could pick the mouse up and carry it anywhere, even if it was wrapped up in a towel. You're right about the wires, though. I had forgotten about that. They chew through anything! I had a pet rabbit once who tried chewing through a wall, and they are rodents just like mice are. Okay, cat.... sic 'um!!!

Get some mouse traps, and barricade your home... Put the old game of cheese and meat on it.. I guaranteed that they will fall for it!

If I can't get him any other way, I'll have to get some traps. I could buy one of those 'Habitraps' (???), those traps that don't kill, so you can relocate them, but the only places I know of to get them is online and that won't help with this mouse! By the time the trap got here, I'd have an entire army of mice! I hope my cat gets it so I won't have to worry about it any more. He (the cat) was playing with something last night, but I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought he just went mental temporarily and was playing with... nothing. You know how cats are! I guess he was trying to catch the mouse last night!

We have never had mice within our house, but field mice have gotten into our attic. I was in my kitchen one day and noticed these little clippings of aluminum on my cooktop. I cleaned it up, but couldn't figure out how it got there. Well, I was over at my table and heard a bump on the counter at the stove and there was a little tiny field mouse that had fallen through the hole he had chewed through 4 layers in the vent going into the attic from my stove! I could only think of getting him out of the house. He was very stunned and I ran and got the broom by the time he got off the counter on to the floor. I swept him out my back door. I told my husband and he said, 'why didn't you hit him with the broom?' Well, like you, I wanted him OUT of my house quickly!! I hate mice!

I have a love/hate relationship with mice, I think. I love the little critters because they're so darned cute and I love all living things. BUT, I hate what they do to walls, wires, anything they can chew through (which is practically everything), and they're little poop machines! Very unsanitary and sometimes disease-ridden. I wanted this guy out ASAP, too! I used a sticky trap meant for flies, a flat kind that you stick on windows (Chinese stores carry them). The mouse got stuck within minutes! We took him outside and used cooking oil to release him from the trap, but made sure that he was far enough away from the house that he didn't come back this way. We have a farmer as a neighbor, so we took the mouse across the road before releasing him, where he scampered off towards the farm. There are plenty of barns over there so I hope the mouse finds a nice, PERMANENT home in one of them! LOL

I am not the type of person to jump run and scream when I see a rodent. i will be startled yes but I won't try to run away from no. I don't have a cat unfortunately and I do have a fat mouse in the house. Have not seen him in over a month but I know he is here. He is in the wall and I hear scratching noises. Sometimes it is loud crunching noises I hear. Have not been able to kill it even with glue traps, Decon traps that trap the mouse without you having to see or touch with your hands. Poison and regular mouse traps are out of the question as I have a dog and a 5 year old.

Aha! Decon traps! I'll have to get some. I have sticky traps, but hate seeing them stuck to it. There's nothing you can do but drown them once they're stuck on them... well, you could squish them, but there's no way I could ever do that! Thanks so much for reminding me about them. It's been so long since I've had to deal with a mouse that I've forgotten a lot about catching them. I hope you catch that mouse before it eats through any wires in your walls, or before it sets up housekeeping and raising a family! Good luck!

I'd be freaking out...I have a terrible fear of mice and bugs. Luckly, our Morgana would never stand for this. She chases flies if she sees them so a mouse wouldn't stand much of a chance around here. Good luck relocating it. ~~MY OWN PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF**

Hahahaha! Thanks, twoey. I was able to catch the mouse using a glue trap meant for flies. The glue isn't as sticky as that on mouse traps so I was able to take the little guy outside and across the road. My son said that vinegar helps to release things from glue. I tried it and it worked! The mouse ran off towards the farm across the road. LOL

Your story reminds me of something that happened in my home years ago. I had adopted a Siamese that had been abused. It turned out that she was half blind from the abuse (she had a skull fracture, broken ribs and heavens knows what else). Well we had a mouse come in the house...we'd hear the thumps at night and couldn't figure out what was going on until one evening my Mom and I were sitting watching television when a mouse showed up and sat in the middle of the living room. It sat there no moving for a good ten or fifteen minutes. It was like it was waiting for someone or something. Finally my cat came wandering into the living room and the chase started. The mouse would run with the cat in hot pursuit. My cat would run into something and stop to regain its balance and sight. The mouse would stop and wait until the cat would recover and then the chase would start again. This went on for about 10 minutes until my cat got tired. The mouse would then go back into its home and the cat would wander off for a nap. This went on for a couple of years. It's like the cat and mouse were fast friends! My grand daughters caught a mouse and brought it into my room to see if they could scare the daylights out of me. They were disappointed when I reached out and petted the mouse. While I don't have mice in my home (I have a couple of cats that are avid hunters) they don't bother me anymore. I guess after awhile you become desensitized to the country critters. Mice, lizards and snakes don't rattle me the way they used to. I just get something to catch them in and take them outside and re-release them.

I think one of the funniest things that happened was last year when my daughter, son in law, two grand daughters and my son in law's uncle stayed with me for 9 loooooonnnnngggggg months. I live in a 1 1/2 bedroom house so you know we were packed in like sardines! It was one of those true nightmares that I am very glad is over. The kids got tossed out by the home owner's association (for rule infractions and the way they were treating me) and now live 200 miles away, which I am extremely happy about. Well anyhow my BF took me out to a very nice restaurant for dinner. We were enjoying the meal when the cell phone rang. (I kept it on the whole time the kids were living in my house in case of an emergency) I answered it and it was my daughter. I couldn't believe the question she had! "How do you get a skunk out of the yard?" I stifled a giggle and gave her the totally honest answer..."You don't get a skunk out of the yard, you wait until IT decides to leave!" My daughter would countryfy, but my son in law is a lost cause! He is terrified of spiders, lizards, snakes, bugs, tarantulas, and any other kind of bug or slithering kind of creature. If he thinks a spider is on him he screams like a girl and demands that someone remove it!. I am so glad that there is someone else like me who prefers to re-release the creatures rather than just kill them!

That story is adorable! It reminds me of Tom and Jerry. I still have some getting used to country life to do. We just moved here last year from the suburbs. Not a major jump, since we had mice, rabbits, chipmunks and deer wander around our home in the suburbs, but the country critters seem to be so much bolder! I've always been one to capture and release. I'm too empathetic and always put myself in the other's place, even if that 'other' is a mouse! He just wanted to be warm, dry and fed. We caught him and released him closer to our farmer neighbor's place. There are plenty of barns and food for the little fella to make a good home in.

Hello dear friend... First of all, I'd find out exactly where he's getting in????? He's obviously found a way somehow? Once that's done...immediately seal it off. Get yourself a pair of surgical rubber gloves...set them near your PC...have them ready to put on. We don't want anything to happen to you, just to be on the safe side. If you're not too squeemish, pick him up when HE least expects it. He sounds kind of docile to me. Not to mention, he's probably more afraid of YOU, than you are of him. Then give him "the boot" right out the old front door. I would also advise NOT to go the cheese route, unless you want to entice him for capture. He's obviously able to get in without the need for a "setup". Lastly, please don't kill the poor little guy, and give my love to the cat. cdrxo

Pick him up??? No way! I never want to kill these cute little guys. After all, they only want what we all want... a nice, warm home and food to fill our tummies. I have no idea where he came in, but I've had the doors and windows open a lot lately because the weather has been so nice, so he could have come in anywhere. He came in after a day of rain, so I'm assuming he was just looking for a dry place to hang out for awhile. He really WAS docile! I never saw a mouse so 'non-skittish'! He acted domesticated. I believe that, if I had put my hand out to him, he would have happily jumped right on it! I used a 'not very sticky' sticky trap. It's flat and meant to catch flies. I put it on my desk right at the cord the mouse was using to climb up and down. It didn't take long before he was stuck. We took him outside, across the road and used cooking oil to get him unstuck, at the suggestion of my son. (It worked great!) There's a farm across the road, so the hope was that he would find his way over there and make a nice home in one of their barns. He DID scamper off in that direction. I'll let my cat know you send your love. He just wants to play with mice... not kill them. All they are to him are little toys with legs.

That's great...glad to hear it. I knew you were the kind and gentle type. However, don't be surprised if your farmer neighbour says: "No doubt he's probably from THAT place next door. She's forever playing on that dang computer of hers with a little mouse anyway!" :-)

Ewwwwwww! I hate finding corpses of any kind! We found a headless squirrel on our deck once. Don't have a clue as to where the head was! Or who removed it's head in the first place! My cat is a lover. The only thing he wants to do with mice is to play with them. I watched him once, playing with a mouse. He chased it, cornered it and caught it in his paws, then let it go so he could do it all over again. We caught the mouse and released it across the road, towards a farm. I hope he finds a nice home over there.

When I was just a pup my mom had a really hilarious interaction with a mouse and her cats. What happened was this: The mouse went into my mother's bedroom. She saw the mouse, screamed, and jumped several feet-straight up-onto the bed. One of my siblings was in the room with her chased the mouse away. Them my momma had a very serious talk with our cats. She told them no more cat food and until you catch that "blankedy blankedy" mouse. It wasn't but a day before she found a corspsified body of a mouse.

You may need to keep some mouse traps and let your cat continue to scope the place out. My cat is really good at seeing things that are moving around. Especially seeing that it keeps popping up around your computer, let her stay around there, she may be able to catch the mouse. I actually had something similar happened to me, but it did not happen in the house that I am living in right now. This was crazy, I was using the restroom and there was something that had moved in the hallway. Literally the mouse had stopped took a long look at me and ran away. Eventually we got some mouse traps and caught him. We did not have a cat at the time.

I was going to say that remark about your computer mouse too. Some beat me to it. So I suggest you put down some mouse traps too. And keep the kitty around I am sure the cat will eventually get that little booger sooner or later. Do you see anywhere he could have entered the room through a hole near your computer? Put a little cheese or some peanut butter on the mouse trap.

I suppose he could have gotten in anywhere. The weather is extremely nice and I've had windows and doors open to let in the fresh air. It rained a lot yesterday... all day. That's probably what brought the mouse inside in the first place. He might leave now that it's dry and very nice outside. I hope so!!! Yep, I'm going to be extra nice to my kitty now and give him lots of treats just so he'll stay near me in case that mouse shows up again! LOL It's strange that the mouse seems so comfortable in here. We have two dogs and two cats who have full run of the house. Their scent is everywhere! But that mouse doesn't seem to be the least bit phased by it. Country mice! Hmmph!

That's very kind of you. It would definitely be my first choice because I love all life, too. My second choice, since we already have enough living things that I have to take care of, is to trap it in one of those humane traps that don't kill, so I could relocate the mouse to another part of the country! I wouldn't want him coming back and making this his permanent home! I worry about them chewing through wires and things like that. I hope I can catch it. I have a small animal trap for rabbits, gophers, etc. but it's too big for a mouse. Right now, I have a towel beside me, as someone else suggested, and a large jar to, hopefully, put the mouse in so I can take him to the other side of town and let him go. A lot of trouble for one mouse, I know, but I don't want him coming back and bringing his entire family with him! LOL

Luckily, where I live, rodents do not live long because it is too hot where I live and there are a lot of reptiles and cats around the place. I do not have one mouse around my area because my cat and his girlfriend and her kittens next door have taken care of all of them. No rat or mouse survives in my neighborhood for long. If they do it is a miracle, or the cats are just being lazy.

I have a lazy cat. LOL Actually, my cat did go nuts trying to catch this little guy, but the mouse was awfully small and awfully quick and my cat is awfully large and clumsy. The mouse was caught and relocated to a more "mouse friendly" home... across the road at a farm.

OK... I am going to assume that you are living in a landed property. Cos I cannot imagine a mouse climbing all the way up to the floor where I live in an apartment block. I would really be freaked! I sure hope you manage to catch that mouse and let it go FAR FAR AWAY from your home. Recheck all your cabling and wiring. Ensure that the mouse did not bite thru the insulation. Otherwise, if there ever is a short circuit, it would be disastrous!

we had a tiny lil field mouse that moved into my litle girls doll house once. i went into her playroom and there he was.. turning sommersaults off of one of the tiny beds and jumping up and down playing happy as could be in and around the miniature furniture. i couldnt help but stand there watching him for a while and giggle. he knew i was there.. about 3 feet from the dollhouse, but continued to frolic and play without a care occaisionally stopping to sit up on his back legs and gaze at me. soo i knelt down and started talking to him hehe after about 15 or so minutes of this, and him now running out of the dollhouse to the middle of the floor where i was and back again, i got a small rubbermaid container my daughter usually kept plastic eggs in and scooped the little bugger up in it and took him outside to my backyard and released him. he didnt run away once out of the box.. but instead ran a couple circles rund my foot and then sat up on my boot lookin at me LOL i stayed out there playing with him for a little bit and when he finally got off my boot and started entertaining himself with a small tuft of pine needles, i went back inside

Umm, you want to move closer to me??? LOL I'm not overly fond of them but I've caught some in the past (mice, not wasps!). My son told me that cooking oil will release anything stuck to these things so we took him outside, across the road and closer to the farmhouse over there where we got him unstuck. He scampered off towards the farm. They have lots of barns so, hopefully, he'll find a nice, warm home there with plenty to eat.
