Assimilation was the rule in Rome. There were so many nations under the Roman empire that Rome had a fixed code of conduct and all were expected to adhere to it. Today we day When in Rome . . . as a way of saying put aside you qualms and go with the flow. Be like the others, follow the rules, even if you don't agree with them. It sounds a little oppressive but try not doing it in a professional setting and you will soon find yourself unemployed
