Photography for a beginner

Recently I've become interested in learning to take proper pictures. I've been taking pictures for years but it's rare I'm satisfied with the end results.
What camera is best for a beginner? Any tips on how to take a good picture? Later today I'm going out with a friend for another lesson. I'd love to hear from you guys as well.
Thanks!

There are so many fine cameras, but the answer to your question is simple: choose a single lens reflex which can accpt interchangeable lenses. Don't be persuaded that a good prosumer or higher end SLR-like camera is equivalent; not if you really want to progress in photography.
As for lessons, there are plenty of on-line resources, but if you can get to a hands on course, that is better by far.

I just bought a new SLR digital camera and I am being told a few things on how to use it off the automatic setting, but next year i am going to do a little course on how to use it properly as I don't want to just sit on auto with this camera...photography is a good fun hobby.
