What is your favourite ruth rendell novel and why?

I enjoy reading her stories - but really can't name any favourites - I enjoy all her books, especially those with Inspector Wexford. Do you know that she also wrote crime stories in historical settings, under the name of Barbara Vine? I have read 2 of those books - really good!
