Kitchen Window - badly damaged woodwork

Through an account I have with mypoints I signed up for window replacement as mine in our house are old and damaged. Some of the windows are original from when the house was built in the early 50's. Anyhow after hiting submit on the form for this I recieved a phone call almost immediately. Less than a minute actually. I have had Sears Home Remodeling out so far. Man windows are exspensive as heck. Over $1,000 average for a standard sized windows. This is a photo of the wprst window in my house. This is my window above the kitchen sink. Lots of water damage to the woodwork. So the framework as well needs replacing. Just this window would cost around $1300. So when was the last time you had any company out for free estimates for home remodeling work? What type of work was it for? Did it go quickly? Myself I am the rush type when it comes to sales people. Skip the preliminaries and give me the cost. Hahaha! Thanks in advance all. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL - I've NEVER had someone come to the house to give me an estimate for remodeling work! I just do it myself :) Yep, little Miss Independance here - when I owned my house I completly replumbed the entire house and gutted the bathroom down to the rafters and rebuilt the whole thing. Only help I had was oldest son was still at home in those days and he helped with some 'muscle work'. He re-roofed the house for me in exchange for 'rent' I bought the materials per his list and he did the labor.

LOL - gottcha :) I love MyPoints, have been a member there for something like 8 years now. Don't get a lot but I don't do the special offers or anything - still manage between $25 and $50 gift certificates each year. I usually wait till time for new winter coats to 'cash in' son and I trade off each year so get certificate for where ever we've spotted the coat we want :) It's his turn this year.

Hi GRANDPA BOB, Its such a shame when you need new windows and it cost so much these days,so try and get the cheapest price possible. We bought a brand new house few years back so we don't need any replacement yet and it all double glazed as well so we should be aright for few more years, hope all is well and take cae. Tamara

Well you never asked Andy out he can do it for cheaper lol. Actually mom did mention not wanting to ask andy to do it but he said he would and his time is more open as now his visits with Emma are every other weekend. So when moms got the money Andy will install and save you some money at least.

Those prices are horrible to me but I have not had to buy any windows for a home before like that. I am the say as you with sales people, help me with what I want then leave me alone. Or when you go to a store and need help they are no where to be found.

A couple of years ago I had Sears come and give me an estimate on siding and windows....now I wish I had done it as the cost has went up so much! I am like you. Get to the bottom line!

We recently had our roof retiled, and it was in need of it as there was a leak upstairs when it rained really hard.. So we had three estimates done and looked at some of their previous work.. Hubby took care of it all, thankfully.. and he's very slow and methodical about it, although the price/bottom line was a very important factor too. Next summer we want to get aluminum put on the "soffett and fascia" (I now know what that is.) We did have an estimate done and seems like it will cost us $3300. The roof cost $4000! - My folks got windows a couple of years ago and they said it was very expensive!

Did you get some good points from mypoints? I belong to mypoints too, I am up to 6000 points, I am saving for a gift card to use at Christmas time. When I first got my house I had furnace people come out, financially I have to stick with the old furnace. I can't afford a new one now. I have an old space heater, but it works good. I would love to get new windows. Mine would cost alot too. My house was built in 1909, the windows are tall. Maybe someday. I need some other work done too. I have been fortunate and had some friends that were handy and gave me a discount on work. Now if only my other friend would hit the l;ottery, I would be set. Its fun to dream.

That is a ridiculously large amount. If you can't do the work yourself or with help from a relative, get multiple estimates. Someone told me that after getting multiple estimates for siding that Sears came back and lowered their price to below the lowest estimate and they saved over 50%. Don't jump on the first place and talk to friends and neighbors.

oh yea, they're right on it when you ask for information. i had..hmm..about 15 windows replaced (half of what we have) a few years back. being as every single one was custom (victorian house,no rhyme or reason to size) cost me all told about $7-9000.4 of the windows were 83X36.. they do the free estimate, but they pressure you from the git go to "lock in" the price now.they needed done though, only thing keeping them up was the lock.

I am a member of my points and I am having a solar man come out soon. I am looking into having solar system installed on the roof of the house. I would love to go completely solar so we do not have huge PG&E bills. Our power bills run around 175 dollars a month when we do not use the heater or air conditioning. Last month we paid 245 dollars and I only use the air conditioning for a few hours in the evening. Yakes that adds up quickly.

Oh yes, remodeling work is expensive. Our house needs windows desperately but they are so expensive. Our windows are so bad, that in the winter you can feel cold air coming in, it takes a fireplace and a woodstove to heat the house, even then the heat doesn't reach to the back bedrooms so the back of the house is always cold. All the windows in the house need to be replaced, they are the original windows so most of them are single-pane. We had a guy come out and give us an estimate one time, and just for 9 windows, it was going to cost 10,000.00. I couldn't believe it, thats not even all the windows, the ones in both bedrooms need to be replaced too they whistle when the wind blows..lol. We haven't done it yet, its too expensive, the only way we could do it, is if we do one window at a time, I know we'd save on the heating bill if we could.

We pretty much do our own home repair. There is generally someone in the family that can do most anything, thank goodness!
