i used both, depending on the dishes that i cook. If for sauteing, i would prefer using the olive oil rather than other types of cooking oil. For baking, i would prefer using butter rather than margerine. Sometimes i will use butter in my rice dishes, to enhance the aroma of the rice. Although much more expensive (in my country), I prefer to use olive oil (extra virgin to be exact) as there are many health related benefits that we can get from using the olive oil. Butter is also preferable because of the absence of trans-fat in it, when compared to margerine.

I have just discovered the yummy taste of olive oil. I had some in the cabnet for some time and I added it to my spaggetti sauce with mushrooms. It tasted so good that I started using it in place of butter for everything that I make. I have read that it is a lot more healthier for you too. I have even used it to cook scrambled eggs in and for homemade bread. I like to put it on noodles with fresh grated parmesian cheese.

Welcome to mylot! I do enjoy using butter every now and then but overall I much prefer to use olive oil for cooking. It is far healthier and has a subtle taste to it that I like. The only downside to olive oil though is that it has a much lower maximum heat temperature than other oils like peanut and sesame so it is not so good for frying.
