What book got you into reading?

I find that in the case of my children, they didn't like reading until they found "THAT BOOK" the one that kept their interest and in both cases made them into readers. For my son, it was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when he was in 5th grade, now he's an avid sci-fi, fantasy, and Horror fan. My daughter didn't find her book until she was a freshman in high school, then she read Fern Michael's Weekend Warriors and now she reads similar books and for some reason has taken to reading historical fiction (war time stuff this week). I have been reading since a very young age and read just about everything (but not biographies). The first book I can remember reading was Those Miller Girls when I was in the 3rd grade. How about you? Do you think the first book to keep you interested determines the genre you end up liking best?

I actually forgot about them. I read all of them and the Hardy Boys series as well, in fact the first books I bought and kept were the Hardy Boys Series.

The book that got me into reading which is also my favorite is The catcher in the rye. I read it in grade 11 for a book report and it really spoke to me.

Is it still read in school in your area? They pulled it from the reading list a few years ago here and I think it was a big mistake. The current feeling is that books like that and The Bell Jar and Lord of the Flies are too mature for today's teens. That we need to be more sensitive to their issues and books like these are hurtful. I don't understand how this can be true but the decision wasn't mine. I went out and bought the books for my kids and they couldn't see any issues with them.
