How do you react when you are unsure if someone is gesturing to you?

Let's say someone in front of you seems to be waving at you, but you're not sure if it's you they're waving at or someone behind you. What do you do? Do you just wave back and hope you're the one they were waving at? Do you just ignore it? I could never figure out what to do in this situation.
