September 11 - effects of

United States
September 11, 2008 4:11pm CST
Today is September 11. It is so easy to forget history as we continue to move forward. I was wondering who here was affected by the tragedy. Please share your thoughts. I remember I was teaching college at the time. I was driving to class. I called my mother because she was the only one I could think of that was home and asked her if it was true. I called my husband and he didn't believe me. I remember walking into class and having a room full of stunned faces staring at me. We discussed a few things and them went in search of a television to see the news.

I remember that day well i hadnt been home long with my twins from the hospital when i seen it on tv i was shocked. then the stuff with the pentagon (which my uncle was near that day) so i imediatly called him he was fine was the last to make it across the bridge before they closed it. Since then i have done alot of research and i think the only terrorists that did it was our own government too much evidence states this fact. Its sad really but then again ppl will do anything for money...........

Do you really believe this? How can you live here? I can't begin to express the shock I feel from your nonchalant comment.

No thanks, I am not interested in your links. We obviously don't agree and will have to agree to disagree. Being a college professor for more than 10 years I have to take exception with your dumbing down comment. But there is just another point for us to disagree on. As a country we are not alone on this planet. If you choose not to help others around us, it will come back to hurt us. There are many reasons why as a country we are called upon by others to help them. Us making money is not one of them, in fact the war has cost us money. Money well spent in my opinion. Making it possible for us to continue on as a country. Leaving the country really isn't that difficult. You should probably look into it if you desire it. And for the record, there is only one person who has ever given up his American nationality. He defected to Russia and would do anything to get back.

I think this is one of those days that people are going to remember for the rest of our lives, in terms of our generation; I know that my parents can both remember where they were when John F. Kennedy was assasinated; I am sure the generation before that has dates, like the Stock Market crash or the bombing of Pearl Harbor or Hirojima. I know that no matter how old I get, I will always remember where I was and what I was doing. It's just one of those events, and hopefully we never forget because it was the day our lives changed forever.

What a great point. I had never thought about how this is one of those times for our generation. It always seemed to be different, but I am sure those that you mentioned felt the same way for them - uniquely different.

I think all Americans were effected by 9/11 because our home was attacked. While I did not lose anyone in the attack it still deeply effected me emotionally. I will never forget that day. My husband and I, we were not married at the time, had just moved in to our second home and my parents moved in with us because they didn't have anywhere else to go. I was sleeping and we had a T.V in our room and my husband was awake watching the Today show. It was around 8am and he woke me up when he saw the first plane fly into the first tower. I thought he was joking because I had just woken up and he has always been a joker. Sadly he was not joking and I started getting really scared. I thought at first maybe it was an accident and then we seen the second one hit and found out it was no accident but a terrorist attack. I had never been so scared in my life. Just sitting there thinking that we had been attacked on our own soil. I am from Ohio and even though we were nowhere near New York, it scared me and bothered me really bad. I started thinking about how many people were on the hijacked planes and how many were in the towers and knew there was no way they all could have made it out alive. Then they showed people jumping from the towers and that made me literally sick. Then we found out about The Pentagon and the plane crashing in Pennsylvania and it just made me feel so much worse. I watched the movies after they came out and cried the whole time. I sometimes don't understand how they can make movies out of something so horrible knowing that the people who lost their loved ones will live it over again by watching those movies. God, I hope nothing like that ever happens again. I will never forget and I know no one else will either.

Thanks for sharing your comments. I agree with you about never forgetting. It is a mark on our history, actually a scar.

I don't know anybody personally who was affected by 9/11. I do remember the day it happened too, I was in college and we watched the twin towers collapse on a jumbo tron. I'll never forget that day, I haven't told my kids about this day, I don't know if they would understand, they are 8 and 5. Thank you for posting this discussion.

I can't imagine the memory attached to what should be a happy occasion.
