What do you think about schools today?

My questions is... What do you think of today's schools? Do you think they are adequately teaching our children? What areas need more attention? What areas are getting too much? Our local school seems to spend all it's money on the special needs students and the regular average students are getting less attention and learning. And I think there is too much focus on the test scores, teachers are back to teaching the test and not the basics of reading, writing, and math. What do you think?

I think today's schools that I have had experience with have been somewhat lacking in certain areas. My son was constantly bullied, one time in a classroom with the teacher there. She wasn't even paying attention! Unfortunately, I think it's harder today because there are a lot of unruly children out there. The teacher has to tend to them and sometimes well mannered students get left behind. I started homeschooling my son last year, he is now in the 8th grade. My sister has homeschooled her oldest since the start. I am so enjoying it. He really understands things now because we take time in the areas that he needs to. He is a smart kid and always got good grades, but sometimes didn't quite understand what he had just learned. This was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I considered that option, but we live to rural and I wanted to make sure he got the social skills that kids need. Plus there are no museums nearby and traveling to the nearest was not an option at that point. Thank you for your response.

To be quite honest with you I think that my local high school needs to be closed or the whole district for that matter. The only reason that I say this is because I went to my local school district as a student from pre k to 12 grade and graduated from the local high school here. The high school teaches all the students at a third grade level. I am not trying to be funny but it is the down right truth. More then half my graduating class had to drop out of college the first semester and go to a community college so they can retake the basic classes so they can learn the stuff they were suppost to learn in high school. Its a down right shame. But, that is just my local school district.

Yes I can see where that would be a real problem. The worst part of it is that the fault is probably not with the teachers but with the school board or district regulations. For some reasons these people seem to have control now not the teachers. Thank you for your response.

Personally, I do think the schools are performing poorly compared before. Not only do teachers can't discipline the students because of the different laws protecting the child but also, students today are way too different from before (around 10 years ago). They are more wilder and will say what they want to say. Quality books are also going the drain and students attention on studying became less because of the different computer games developed. Most of the students time are devoted on this than studying.
