Have You Ever Had A 'Medical Emergency,' That Required Further Treatment,

Canada

However, you felt totally yourself again, a couple of days later, causing you to question why you sought professional help in the first place? This is the position I'm finding myself in today. This past Tuesday, I paid an emergency visit to a 'new' dentist, because I woke up with an abscess on my gum. It was quite painful, and by later in the day, a piece of nearby tooth had broken off, and was hanging there, causing even more discomfort. I have no dental insurance, and haven't had this for years, so cannot pay regular visits to a dentist. I also know, that I currently need thousands of dollars worth of work done on my teeth. The dentist who saw me is very nice. X-rays were taken, and antibiotics were prescribed. I also got a prescription for some 'heavy duty' pain medication, which I haven't even touched. Because I take Aspirin on a regular basis, due to other health issues, I have to see my family doctor. The purpose for this, is so that she can order blood tests to see if I may have excessive bleeding, during the 'now required' procedure I'm to have. Yesterday, while brushing my teeth, the piece of hanging tooth flipped sideways, digging into the abscess. I wiggled it back and forth, and thankfully the piece of tooth came out. Almost immediately thereafter, I felt like there was nothing wrong with my mouth at all. I've been able to eat normally again, etc., etc. I need to have oral surgery, to remove this tooth. I've been told I could end up with swelling, and possible infection, not to mention the pain I'll have. I 'almost' wish I'd have just removed the piece of tooth myself now. I really can't afford the procedure anyway ... Has this type of a situation ever happened to you (either medical or dental)? Did you later wonder, if you should've waited awhile, before rushing off for treatment? Did you follow through with the prescribed treatment, even though the whole condition 'appeared' to have cleared up?

Hi someonesmom... I, like you, don't have dental insurance...about 2 years ago my tooth broke and I was like, crap, now I have to have it taken out...I didn't have any pain...thank goodness...and the filling I got a bizillion years ago is what is holding the other half of the tooth in place.. I still haven't gone to the dentist and hope I won't need to....but I am sure I will have to get it fixed someday... I have had Kidney stones and gall bladder problems that did need further treatment but nothing other than that... I just hope it stays good for you so you don't have to go have it taken out...but it may be best in the end....

Hi Feona, I can certainly relate to all you've said here. I hope your tooth continues to hold out for you. Having no dental insurance is a very scary thing, because 'we' don't know where to turn, when a real emergency comes up. I 'am' planning on having the oral surgery, as I know it's the right thing to do. I'm just amazed at how good I feel today (Friday), as opposed to the way I felt on Tuesday. I trust your gall bladder, and kidney stone problems are a thing of the past. Take care, and thanks so much for sharing here.

My gall bladder is gone but I do still have some more kidney stones....I had a very big one in 2004 and had to have them removed by lithotripsy..but I have some in my left one now.... I am glad you are going to get it done...it is surprising how good you do feel...I hope all goes well...

Thanks. That piece of broken tooth I removed, seemed to be a key factor. I'm sure the antibiotics are helping too. I'm not looking forward to the procedure itself, as it'll be a step backwards (until I recover). I'm sorry to hear about your ongoing battle with the kidney stones.

I had a medical emergency 4 years ago that required further treatment. I went to the ER with a growth that was pressing on my diaphragm and I had difficulty breathing. Bottom, line it was a 13lb malignant ovarian. I was very blessed in that God looked after me and I received fantastic treatment. I am cancer free for four years now.

The reason you had no Pain left is because the Antibiotics had set in Sweetie and removing the loose Tooth just took the rest of the Pressure of it and that is why it was a relief I always used to suffer with Absesses and believe me on the Day it started and if you would not have had the Antibiotics it would not have eased the Pain as the Abscess would have caused you more and more Pain As for the Treatment yes when it comes to Antibiotics no matter what you have to finish the Treatment even if you feel better I have to do it each time I get them for my Lungs My Lungs are better but I have to finish this course of Antibiotics or the Infection will be back

Hi gabs, I know you're right about the antibiotics, but it really did make me wonder at the time. I'm sure the pain would've just gotten worse, if it hadn't been for the meds. I'm glad to hear that your lungs are better, and pray they'll stay this way for a long time to come. Thanks so much for stopping by here. It's great to see you.

Actually I also don't have medical or dental insurance so I have to pay it myself so I make sure I'm really good and sick before I go to the dr/dentist. Most times I just let it go until it's emergency room serious before I do anything. I also need several teeth pulled but at $50.00 a pop they won't get done too soon. I just do what I can and unless it's an emergency then it waits. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I have had the same thing happen several times! The most recent incident was a Kidney stone that had me doubled over in pain and feeling certain that I was going to pass out. I had my room mate take me to the hospital (which shocked her since I NEVER ask to go to the Dr. for any reason. When I arrived they rushed me right into a room because they also thought I was going to pass out! By the time they finished with the intake info and the preliminary Temp/Blood Pressure/How long has this been going on? "stuff" the stone had moved down to my bladder and the pain was completely gone! Talk about feeling foolish! They assured me that it was a good thing I came in as I was severely dehydrated, which probably caused the stone to move in the first place. Three bags of IV fluid, a Cat Scan and $4000 later they announced that there are actually 3 more stones in my kidneys that could decide to migrate when ever they feel like it and sent me home with 3 days off from work and a perscription for heavy duty pain killers that I never even filled! In fact I went home took a shower and went to a wedding!! Have also had the dental issues come and go. I usually try to get them taken care of though as there is nothing worse than dental pain! Have had thousands of dollars worth of dental work done and the latest estimate to do what really needs to be done is $20,000 more. Some of that is cosmetic and I will never be able to afford that. But when I need a root canal, fillings or crowns I try to get that done as bad teeth can lead to other issues including heart and kidney disease. Good Luck and do try to get at least the essential work done. There are suppposed to be affordable dental plans out there now that individuals can get for them selves.

Hi equilady, Welcome to myLot. It's a good thing that you decided to go to the hospital, even though you ended up feeling so much better. You obviously really needed the IV, and other treatment. "$4000.00," wow! I do hope you have medical insurance. It's such a shame that dental care is so costly. $20,000 is huge. I know that teeth problems can lead to other health concerns, so I'm going to have the oral surgery done, for this current problem. Thanks for your best wishes, and for your response here. Take care.
