My grandsons will not be out this weekend to pick my apples.
So I did it myself this afternoon right after mowing the back yard.
The pickings were slim after sorting through them.
A lot had yellow jackets eating them. Some had ants as well in holes.
A lot have bumps on them as well. Now I need some advice please.
Is there something that I should do this fall to protect the tree from possible ant and bee infestation next year? What can I spray on the tree during apple time to keep bees and ants off the apples? I had to toss maybe 15 or 20 apples away due to them being very badly infested with the bugs.
Thanks in advance all.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!

Oh boy! I will be keeping my eyes on this thread! We had lots more good apples this year.. I threw around a lot more sevin dust around here than I usually did.. and another brown pebbly like bag of something I got from Wal-mart.. But, also there were a lot more apples on the tree, due to it being one of the years of more apples, plus lots of rain this spring.. So maybe that's why we had more good apples..

Hey, thanks for best response! I was thinking of you when I've been cutting up apples for apple crisp.. Found an easy way to cut up the apples.. just keep peeling them.. or cutting them like you are peeling them.. it's much faster and easier, and the apples break apart just fine when they cook! (I'm into easy and time saving

I don't know what kind of pests you have in your area but here in the UK one of the worst is the Codling Moth. These creatures seem to have funny habits. They will land at the base of the tree and walk up the trunk to where they are going to lay their eggs in the developing apples.
Instead of spraying (which is effective, of course, but unorganic) fruit growers used to band the trees with a strip of greaseproof paper smeared with axle grease or syrup. This catches the little buggers (and the ants as well) before they get to the apples.
You used to be able to buy the bands ready smeared in long rolls. You would cut off as much as you needed and tie it round the trunk about waist height with a couple of pieces of twine. This was a spring job, when the trees were in bud or even earlier.

When you come Sunday I hope you bring one or two apples for Tyler he was not to happy to miss out on apple picking time. May have to go to a orchard so he can pick his own one of these weekends.

We're having the same problem with the fruit here - apples, peaches, and pears all have a lot of worms and I know we're going to have to spray but I'm not sure what. I know diluted dish soap works on garden plants so am wondering if it would help the fruit trees.

That's a lot of mixing etc using that for the trees.
I am going to Bachmans Nursery and ask them soon.

Well let me know what they say because I would love to know. I don't like using chemicals but there's no since in having the trees if we're not going to be able to use the fruits.

Your worms are likely moth or beetle grubs. The moth will lay its eggs only at certain times and you need to spray at very specific times to catch it, depending on the pest in your area.
We used to use bands on a lot of trees. This stops a lot of pests from crawling up the trunk to lay their eggs in the developing fruit. The bands are simple. Just a strip of greaseproof paper tied tightly around the trunk and smeared with a grease or sugar mixture.

You are doing much better than I am. My problems are squirrels and chipmucks. Plus the fact the apples are very small, hardly worth picking..
I hope someone has something for you, maybe something I can use too..
