I was skeptical when an email came today with this header, but my curiosity got the best of me. Inside was a link to the site for a device called the Magicjack. I was wondering if any of you have heard of this. The device plugs into your computer USB drive and enables you to make all of your calls for free. The ad states that there is a one-time $40.00 fee when you order it followed by a years' free service. After that you only have to pay about $20.00 each month. This is a great idea and I am surprised that I had never heard of it before. Would you use such a product?

Then its not really free? Skype is supposed to be cheap for calls and is free computer to computer. Skype is how I am talking to my husband who is in Sweden for business for 5 weeks and its not costing us anything cause we are calling from computer to computer. All you need is speakers and a mike.

Then that wouldn't be too bad. I don't what a call to a phone cost with Skype. But you can 1-800 for free with it. Even from overseas cause my husband has done that.

Magicjack - A device that is used with your computer to make free phone calls.
I am familiar with Skype, Aurone, and I'm sure it serves a good purpose. I think the actual cost of the product I am referring to was $20.00 per year. I would have to go back to the site, however, to confirm that.

I have never heard of this. it does sound like a great idea though. Long distance phone calls add up quick that is for sure a once a month fee of $20.oo isn't bad at all.

I think it would have huge benefits, Shaun, for anyone who makes frequent long distance calls. I don't know that it would benefit me since I get my internet through my phone company.

I have never heard of this either. I would have to really check into more before even thinking of doing it.

I don't have it myself, but my mother does and she recently called me to tell me all about it. She's very happy with it and thinks I would be too, but I'm the great procrastinator and am also complacent so it will be a month of Sunday's before I actually look into it myself. However, if you'd like to take my mother's word for it, its worth its weight in gold.

It sounds great but remember that nothing in this kind of world is really for free. You'll probably find that whoever is doing this is making money from the payments you make and that there is some way he profits from using the internet line for phone calls. You might also find that the times and places you use the net for calls are limited.

I wouldn't use this service and primarily because I would be skeptical about using this device with my computer. A few years ago there was a site which allowed me to connect long distance and talk free to friends out of state. The connection was awful. All I had to do was download the site and use a headset. It was like using a cell phone that had a bad connection. Could hear every other word so the conversation was pretty much useless. I can get unlimited long distance service with our phone carrier for $20.00 per month. Please let us know if the device works well if you decide to get it.

I first heard about the MagicJack during one of those late night paid programs sprees I went searching for. I thought it was a pretty good deal, but my Mother-in-law got it and says it's not as great as it seems. She tells me that, there were times she was in the middle of a call and it would cut off for no reason. Sometimes the line would be full of static. So she returned hers and asked for a refund. I was thinking about trying it out for myself, since I'm just one of them people that likes to try new things out, but well after hearing what my mother-in-law went through I'm having second thoughts.

It is cheap. However, there not being truthful. They said it was free. I am not trying to nitpick. I am just so tired of being misled. FOr me finances are a big deal and the idea of something being free is the best. I hate when I decide to sign up or try it out the service rep or a computer screen pops up telling me of a one time service charge or a monthly fee for tax or what have you. I wish they would just come out and say phone service for less. I do think it is a good thing. However, a friend of mine got into something like that. He began receiving bills that were more than they were supposed to be. They forgot to mention the monthly fee for connection or what ever else. He also began having problems with the computer. The repairman said to be careful when using your computer as a phone. So just make sure you research it in great detail. I would hate to see you get scammed. GOod Luck! dl
