Shampoos and conditioners..do you have to use "siblings"?

There are so many shampoos and conditioners out these days (remember when it was called cream rinse?!!) that I just have to ask. I know each manufacture praises it's own as they should, but when all is said and done, common sense says there is only so much you can do to make a bottle of shampoo do different things. There are so many on the market these days. I can't say I have tried them all but the ones (many) that I have, I see absolutely no difference in my hair in any way. I can use the 99ยข White Rain and have the same results as the $7.99 Chemistry. Throw in that they all say "use in conjunction with..." meaning use our shampoo with our conditioner for best results. Okay, but really, is there a difference? I mean, if I use Aussie shampoo and Garnier Fructise cream rinse....is there going to be a battle in my hair folicals? If I use Dove shampoo and Finess conditioner...will it damage my hair? I use coupons 80% of the time so I have one coupon so I can only get one item. So I buy the shampoo. ANother coupon for a different brand and I buy the conditioner. What is the problem with using them together? Is it really an issue or is it just a come0n by the manufactures to get you to buy their product? What do you think?

I agree with you,I have tried so many that I myself have lost track and I have bought lots of shampoos and conditioners that cost big bucks and they dried my hair out so much that my scalp itched so bad I thought I had bugs. I myself now use Dove Shampoo and conditoner which is like$1.99 each and my hair is finally ok.I see NO issue as long as it works for you.

Yeah, bottom line if it works for you, why change? I use Dove hand/body lotions and those are the best (I have tried so many due to dry hands) and the one with the oil minerals in it, literally works magic! But don't see a difference in the shampoos. But like you said, $1.99 and it works, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I don't always use the same brand conditioner as shampoo, but I do believe that some brands are better than others and they are not always the most expensive ones either. The Garnier Fructis Shine does a better job than anything I've ever tried. Before it came out I liked some of the "silk" ones but found that the cheap brands were not any place near as good as the famous one. A cup of vinegar does just as well as most of the overpriced products they want us to buy to get the shampoo build-up out.

Well, I use a shampoo and three conditioners and only one is from the same company as the shampoo.I feel if you are lucky enough to find a shampoo or a conditioner that works then use them regardless of the company.

Good way to go. I found that Pantene Thick and Full are fantastic for my hair. I can wash it, curl it, wear it all day, sleep on it and stil have lots of curl and bounce the next morning! So I watch for when it is on sale for about $2.50 and stock up. No other shampoo or condition do that for my hair! And I have tried SO MANY!!!!

LOL I'm just picturing your hair follicles battling because of different brands of shampoo/conditioner hehehehehehe You know what with some few and minor exceptions shampoo is shampoo and most of them do the job right. The same with conditioners. Actually some kinds of hair shouldn't be conditioned every time the hair is washed, but they don't want us to know that, of course :):) Like you I have been curious to try this and that and I find little difference between brands. Some I prefer only because of a small detail that is not even important except for me - for example I like shampoos that leave a fruity smell, specially strawberry LOL - My hair tends to be a bit oily at times so I then use vinegar instead of a brand name conditioner. I leaves my hair perfect. I tend to look for shampoos and conditioners that don't leave much build up and that are of medium price range. Some of the cheaper ones are just great, but some I have noticed that seem to leave me with some dandruff like residue so I avoid them. I don't really think that there will be a problem if one doesn't use twins. I do it often enough LOL It's just the regular pitch to get us to by that brand for everything and make it seem irresistible and extremelly needed - not true of course hehehehe

Yeah, kind of like they show the girl with the really long beautiful, perfectly straight, perfection shine, not a single crooked hair and she is just slinging it around! LIke ours is going to be like that! I remember back in the 70's a brand called Long and Silky (it's cousin was Short and Sassy!) and I saved my babysitting pennies (yes, back then it was 50 cents an hour) and bought my first bottle!!! My hair was about 5 inches below my shoulders and I wanted hair like Cher's. I thought this was the key!! Yeah, right-o! It was the key to loosing my hard earned money!

Just buy one that you know is good. I wouldn't mix them because one brand may cancel the effectiveness of the other. If you find one works for you, why change it ? I like Dove. I but that all the time and Pantene too.

That's part of my question - how do they cancel each other out? One brand of shampoo and a different of conditioner..what is so terribly differnet between them that they would cancel each other out? I buy what is on sale and have not seen a single bit of difference in any of them. Currently I have so many name brand, new issues of shampoo/conditioner I dont' have to buy any and still use name brand expensive ones all the time..and still don't see a difference! I used John Freida this morning and nothing different from 2 days ago when I used Garnier Frutice. Oh well.. live and learn I guess... long as my hair is clean!

Hello there, I usually buy the same brand and family of shampoo and conditioner just so that it will work better. After all, the label at the back always recommends that we use the two together for best results. But I don't mind not using the matching conditioner for a shampoo in case I run out or if it's just not available. i don't notice any big difference actually when I use mismatched shampoo and conditioners. I guess it's nice to have only one smell in your hair rather than 2 different fragrances.

i was once a fan of the shampoo and conditioner tandem but i do remember that what made my skin break out less was the johnson's baby shampoo original and a palmolive conditioner with chamomile. that was then till i realized that i can do without the conditioner and just substitute olive oil after each washing for the conditioner. i never break out anymore. anyway, i read once, from an image improvement book that if manufacturers produce a line of products like: shampoo, conditioner, hair styling products... it is best to choose from that line since the chemicals manufacturers used are meant to really be that effective if used with the chemicals they had used in their other products.
