I refer to myself as a nerd. I consider someone who studies hard and actually enjoys it as a nerd. In effect, since nerds study hard, they're quite good at a specific field. That's why I don't get insulted when someone calls me a nerd.
Do you get insulted when you're called a nerd? Does the word connote something else?

I also really like studying and take my studies very seriously. I really dont mind it when somone calls me a nerd as i sometimes refer to mysefl as such. The only time i find it offensive is when someone says it in a insulting manner.

Hmm, the power of pop culture, eh? Well, nerds are portrayed in most chick flicks as, like you said, smart and hardworking, which isn't a bad thing. However, the younger generation (who are the targeted audience of said chick flicks) seem to focus more on the portrayal of nerds as socially awkward pushovers, people to be bullied by members of other cliques (e.g. the jocks, the cheerleaders, etc.) And, while I haven't really seen it explicitly happen in real life (nor to the extremes of what is done in the movies), I've heard of some bullying cases when I was in high school.
As for me, well, I've never really been called a nerd (at least, not to my face), maybe because of my blatant laziness and general disinterest in academic endeavors, but I did get good enough grades to qualify as one in the eyes of my batch mates. So no, it shouldn't be anything insulting. Sadly, pop culture begs to differ so I guess we're stuck. I never got the point of labeling people into cliques, anyway, so I've never really given this subject a second thought. What I believe is that, as long as you're happy with who you are, doing the things you do without hurting anyone, who cares what other people call you, right? ;)

Nerd is a term of endearment in today's society the nerds shall inherit the Earth example BILL GATES Lord of The Nerds so if someone groups in the category of nerds just think for a moment they believe you could be the next bill gates.
