Mud slinging. Is my memory faulty?

I see comments on the board about why the Obama campaign are slinging mud at Sarah Palin instead of just focusing on their own campaign but didn't she go into pit bull attack mode in her first speech as the Republican nominee?
Each party has the right and responsibility to respond to constant attacks from the other side, it would be insane for them not to. It seems to me that the attacking is coming from both sides. Sarah Palin stepped into that ring all by herself, nobody forced her to, so crying foul that those she's attacking are responding in kind is pretty lame.
Or am I mistaken and that first speech was all hearts and flowers?

She did some mud slinging during her first speach and i will say a lot of the things that were said about Obama and Biden did get me a little mad. But i guess we need to look at the RNC and the DNC as a pep rally for that party. I think of the DNC would have known about Sarah Palin before the DNC they might have made fun of her hunting and being a small time mayor. I really think with these 52 days left before we vote we should stop most of the mud slinging because we need to know about the issues. if obama and biden go on the attack of palin the party might crash and burn. I dont there should be "hearts and flowers" but lets go after Palin for having a husband that works for an oil company. Do we really need someone in th white house with an oil company in their back pocket? these are things we need to think about and talk about with out bring up lipstick or any of those childish things. Obama needs to make sure he does not take too much of the high road because Gore and Kerry both made that mistake.

Well said. Your points are all quite valid and I agree, the conventions are like political pep rallies. I don't think her husband's job with BP is much of an issue since it didn't stop her from taxing oil profits and giving that money directly to the people of Alaska. Her husband actually quit his job when she was elected and when he did go back to work he took a non-management position to avoid any conflict of interests. I'm willing to bet he'll leave his job again should she become VP.
Obama's spokesman actually mocked Palin's mayoral experience immediately after McCain chose her. That's why she brought it up at the RNC as being like a community organizer but with actual responsibilities. Either way those arguments are petty. I agree that it would be nice if all politicians could take the high road. Unfortunately the politicians who do that never win including McCain in 2000.

I'm sorry but we should demonize people who work for oil companies, why? Are you living a "oil free" existence? Is anyone? Besides, maybe the Amish and chances are they have some oil use too.

Irish, Sarah has a legitimate question, not only because of who Palin's husband works for but because of the oil that's located in her home state. There should be discussions about oil, on so many fronts.
As for the Amish, I don't know about their homes but they used generators to provide electricity to the vendors at the Amish market I used to love to visit when I lived in Maryland so they may heat their homes with oil or kerosene. They didn't own any vehicles though.

I think the issue isn't simply the attacks, but the nature of the attacks. I don't think the Obama campaign has launched any attacks against her that I would flat out call unacceptable. I don't think the "lipstick on a pig" comment was intended to insult her and I personally found Biden's comment about her being better looking to be amusing and innocent. The disgusting smears have been coming from liberals all over the place, but not directly from the Obama campaign as far as I know.

Unfortunately, with everyone and his brother having a blog or website it's easier than ever to reach the masses with whatever outlandish allegation a person can come up with. There's little to no responsibility in the media anymore on both the left and the right and it sickens me that a site like the DailyKOS has the power to arbitrarily ruin anyone who doesn't agree with them because of the big money the have behind them.

It's politics. Everyone should expect everyone else to sling mud and get dirty.

Unfortunately the majority of most political campaigns is the mud slinging now days. I really wish both sides would quit and get back to the issues, but then if they did that, the inconsistencies and lack of substance in the campaigns would become obvious! LOL.

I agree. I got into trouble with some folks a while ago by suggesting that she was the latest shiney new object...or something like that...but it's true. The debates will start soon so hopefully the results of those will cut down on some of the sniping. Happy Mylotting to you too!

i do agree that there is much mudslinging going on. you are right. sarah palin downplaying obama as a community organizer is appauling. If it weren't for community organizers we would have millions of americans living on the streets with no food to eat. while the government may do things for it's people it doesn't do enough. its people like Obama who have been most beneficial. i went through a period of time in my life that i was homeless and living on the streets. my mom was a working single mother and the government did nothing for her. it was a community organizer. i have more respect for them than i do th egovernment. the fact that she would be so disrespectful shows that she doesn't america's best interest at heart.

I guess we both missed the hearts and flowers...lol! I've never seen a candidate be so shielded from any questions or criticism in all my life. I'm sorry, but raising questions about claims she'd made herself repeatedly is NOT the same as attacking her. Repeating something you've heard about the claims she's made for the sake of discussion, even if it's not 100% accurate is also not an attack, it's opening something up to debate. An example of what I mean by this is the recent debate over whether Palin left Wasilla with a surplus or in debt; To repeat what's been out there for a few weeks now isn't personally attacking her. If someone claims she left Wasilla $22 million in debt and that figure actually is closer to $18 million, that's not an attack, it's not a "lie", it's just a slight inaccuracy.
Basically, she called herself a pit-bull with lipstick, did she not? What about that would lead us to believe she's fragile and must be handled with great care - or "deference" as McCain spokesman demanded?
