Sometimes when I am making a recipe I change the ingredients to be more affordable or healthy. I am trying to be more creative in my cooking to help stay in the budget. I buy a lot of an item when it is on sale and try to use it up in the meals I make. Do any of you do this? Do you have any tips?

I only buy stuff on sale which I was already planning to buy. I find if I buy stuff in bulk which I was not planning to buy I still don't know how to use it. I just take a recipe and change certain ingredienst to my own taste and my families ofcourse. And try to budget as much as possible. Sometimes I make fried rice and just throw in everything I can find in the fridge haha. It tastes different everytime and still is always good and tasty.

I do my shopping and try to make recipes from what I found for a great price. We are trying to get out of debt really fast so we have cut our food budget a lot to save up the needed money, we get a lot of really random things that I need to make a meal from.

I usually just use whatever I have. I don't really follow recipes-- even when I have all of the ingredients. I prefer experimenting when I cook. It is a lot more fun, and it often proves to be a lot cheaper.

Sometimes just because someone else think's their way is the best it isnt for me. I agree on experimenting, it is a lot more fun.

I do a lot of adjustments for recipes; sometimes they are for cheaper ingredients, but there are other times when I do it because I am looking for a specific taste, or because there is an ingredient not available in our area at all or an alternative that we believe would be better. Part of my love for cooking comes from the ability for me to adjust recipes and take those bluleprints and make my own creations! Just experiment; not all combinations work, but a lot of food common sense and general idea of tastes will go a long way to creating great tastes!

We try to make healthy choices when we can. Experience goes a long way when you are adjusting things. I would have never tried it 10 years ago but today I read a cook book for ideas and dont follow the recipe when I am cooking. I got a feel for the way my family eats and how everything goes together.

Well, I will tell you that whenever I get creative and change recipes, I end up with something that no human being can eat. If you think you know what you're doing and you won't kill anybody with it like when I cook, say go for it! That's a very splendid idea.

I am very concious of our budget. I refuse to spend a fortune on a meal. If I feed my family cheap we are full at the end of the day, if it is pricey then we are full but we are broke too. Ive never killed anyone yet, but I have had to throw away dinner and go out a time or two.
