What does the number in the brackets in front of my name mean???

I am very confused by this. What is this number, what does it really mean??? Firstly I thought they represents the no. of discussions started by me? then I thought they represent the no. of comments, disscussions i have contributed. Then I thought they represent the no. of replies i get in my discussions But it seems whatever i think of it, it turns out to be wrong.
Please help me with this.

I think it is the score in terms of discussions and responses you have posted at my lot so far. Here is the game of numbers also. When ever you post a response your number will increase. Whenever you post a new discussion the number will not be changed your discussion get some response.

It usually represents the number of responses you have made. When you start a discussion your number does not usually change. When you start getting responses to your discussions I think you will earn one point for the discussion at that time. If you do not get any replies to your discussion the number will not change.
