How do you eat your piece of cake ?

Do you eat the frosting first or last ? The question is really not about the cake , but about how we schedule the process of things we like. It's called Delaying gratification: The process of scheduling the pain and pleasures so as to experience the pain first, getting over with it, so that the pleasure is enhanced. The most noticeable example would be when a five year old may eat the cake first and the frosting later. While a majority are said to develop the capacity to delay gratification, a lot of people don't. What about you ?

I feel, everyone goes through this delaying gratification and as we mature our degree of perseverance changes and we grow emotionally and psychologically. Kids are are however less likely to endure or forego anything that amuses them. Like a candy or choc'late or a cake or a gift. They can hardly wait and that goes to show their lack of maturity and thinking power. But then as we grow old this changes for the better. We develop a better control over ourselves and the extrinsic and intrinsic lures. To put it blatantly, we refrain from ice creams, choc'lates and things that we love but as a measure of our diet control. We refrain from so many things actually, which we would have done as a child. Delaying gratification, I feel, is but dependent on how we perceive and made to perceive life as a child. Some kids who are subjected to what-I-want-what-get- syndrome still continue with this as grown ups. In most cases, I find this as disturbing, specially for a person like me, who is much poised and working towards a stern disciplined. On the contrary, I learn from my father and others like him who would forego anything! Yes anything! That requires a a lot of discipline and strength. Even though I am not that extreme, I have always respected people like that who have such a strong emotional control. Another thing I must share with you. Its the recent hype in fund management as in Stock market. There are, as far as my perception goes, two types broadly. The one who invests, sits back and enjoys along term profit. The intermittent bull and bear market hardly perturb them. And there's another group who play this daily gamble(PHATKA). They are happy with short time gain. I know smeone who trades like as in a fish market and gets elated even with a profit of 2-3 rupee! Now that's ridiculous! But then people with different shades and character give dimension to the society and we get to coin terms like delaying gratification and understand the deeper psyche of mankind. smiles...

Thanks Mimpi. You have always taken discussions like these to a much deeper sense by adding so much more in terms of your understanding and wonderful examples. People with different shades and character indeed do give society its various dimensions. Now if everybody as in this particular instance ate the icing last or did the things that they enjoy last, it would make life around pretty monotonous and boring in a way, would it not ?

Yes it would, most definitely. With this note I am leaving. Will catch you up from here.... You must eat both your cake and the icing - that would make it so complete. Many times in our endeavor to delay the indulgence, we forget to enjoy what we should. That's scary!

That is a very interesting point. Forgetting to enjoy what we set out to do. It can happen by unduly delaying the process of gratification. Thanks

OK. Why are we looking to pyschoanalyze the way I eat cake alokn? Can't I just enjoy eating it? lol. Seriously though, I think I am someone that tends to mix it up a little and try to keep the icing lasting with each and every bite until the end if possible. So what does this mean then? Am I good in bed or something?

So it's a little bit of pleasure with pain is it ? James, its actually a simple analysis. "Saving the good things for last".

I agree with the same analysis and was just teasing! People generally don't think that hard on the significance of simple actions like these. I have always found this stuff interesting.

You are like most of us Dpk. We prefer to do the painful things first so that the pleasure or enjoyment is enhanced. Thanks for the response

Sometimes the simple things in life have a lot of significance. It's only when they are pointed out to us do we realise. I learnt it and i'm sharing it with my friends now.

I am guilty of that Delaying gratification. I usually do the hard things first or things that I don't like so when I am finished doing it I could enjoy the day in a happier way. see, I am very guilty of that. SO usually my day goes like, when I wake up I do all my chores then after lunch I just sit here in the computer and enjoy doing mylot since all my house hold chores are finished.
