Computer Modeling : Valuable TOOL OF SCIENCE or LIARS DREAM come true?

Yes, it is true. There are scientists extremely critical of the way computer models have been used to predict man made global warming. Read one such scientist's concerns here. http://www.hawaiireporter.com/story.aspx?bcb0b0a8-86dc-4f0d-acce-dec9605c9b7a I say computer modeling is a two edged sword. 1) Computer modeling can be a valuable tool of science. 2) Computer modeling in the hands of the deceitful can have the appearance of being really cool intellectual heavy stuff while being too complex for most people to refute, even when the model is trash. What do you say?

Hey...Could we consider the game I'm playing as a model of what would happen if I had a double bladed sword? My characters slicing down everything in his path...Hmmm sounds about right doesn't it? You have to measure & judge the accuracy of such things for yourself ( unless you actually think I'd go on a medieval killing spree ).

Truthfully, I have always wondered why you don't crop and enlarge your avatar. It is really cool but hard to see.

Actually it has been. The original shot was from a bit of a distance. Enlarge it much more ( at least with the software I have ) & it becomes pixilated. This was the best I could do with it with what I had.

( using jedi mind trick ) " ignore the avatar- ignore the avatar "

I guess everything valuable has a downside as well. No matter what, if it can work for what's good it also can work for what it isn't, and humans have this special knack for finding the later. I guess we have to take the good with the bad since there is no other way around. Pays to remember both sides, though.

Serious statistics is the same way in its potential to help uncover the truth or be a tool in the hands of liars.

Yes, another one with double edged potential, and still one that can be quite informative when done with integrity.

Conputer modeling can also be UNintentionally deceitful. The one thing you always need to remember about computers is "GIGO" (garbage in = garbage out). With something as complex as "global warming" there are too many unknown factors that come into play. So, even if you do manage to put in ALL of the known factors; you still won't have it right and get accurate results. After all, who suspected that a line of inactive underwater volcanos under the Arctic ice were going to become active NOW. But, that is one of the things that has occurred; and, it is already causing an increase in the amount of melting (they are heating the water under the ice and melting it from the bottom at the same time that warmer air is melting the ice down from the top). How may other "unknown" factors are there and how many more will occur? Computer modeling can also be misused by leaving out known data to skew results according to specific agendas. So, it still comes down to GIGO and whether the data is left out intentionally or unintentionally; you still end up with garbage.

This computer modeling sounds like fun.

I say computer modeling and other intellectual and scientific experiments and facts are only as honest as the people interpreting them. Facts can certainly be skewed to reflect someone's biases and special interests. People shouldn't be too trusting of them. They should listen to a variety of opinions and methods of scientific investiagation and not be overly impressed with something just because it is cutting edge technology.

Boy, that's the truth. It is entirely possible to overwhelm people with new technology almost no one understands while at the same time this new technology, algorithm, or process is trash.
