Any bass players here?

Hi! Are there any bass players here or am I the only one? Here's my story: When I first heard Iron Maiden, I was inspired to start playing guitar instantly when I heard The Trooper. Well, I played guitar for about two years and then I was asked to play bass in a band. Well, I didn't have any other bands to join and I thought that it would be pretty cool to try bass once. The band didn't need a guitar player so I decided to join. Well, after a few months of playing bass in the band, I started thinking that playing bass was a lot better for me than guitar so I decided to put the guitar aside and bought a bass. Since that I have played bass and don't miss the guitar at all What's your story? How did you become a bass player?

well you know i'm part of the BBBBB (Ball Bustin' Bass Brigade Brotherhood) i've been playing for 33-34 years now. i started out playing guitar, mostly rhythm with a little bit of lead. i used to play in a backyard party garage band in Southern California......doing covers of Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow, KISS, etc.....plus we had quite a few cool originals. well one day our bass player decided to join the army (he was already messed up in the head, so why not) so i took over bass duty and never turned back and let's just say the rest is history. i'm completely self taught......i learned the old fashioned way......play the same 10 seconds of the song over and over and over and over and over until you get every note right, wearing down the phonograph needle and driving whoever's in the same house ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!! so here i am, just turned 46, played in a few bands over the years, never made the big time.....but i still have my Fender Precision, and now i just jam with a few friends who play instruments......and still loving it........ROCK ON!!!

I knew you would answer sooner or later But I didn't know you have played SO long! 33-34 years is a pretty honorable amount of years You must be pretty good I'd love to see if you have any Youtube videos...

sorry, no videos........that i know of. i've been playing that long but not continuously, when i was younger i played all the time. but then i got married a couple of times and did the whole family thing and bass playing became more of a hobby. now like i said i pretty much just jam with friends who play a lot of different styles, but i still try to keep up on my Steve Harris/Geddy Lee/Geezer Butler chops.

i never really tried YYZ.....i know there's some pretty quick licks and a lot of those Rush timings that never really quite make sense. i can play Xanadu, Vital Signs, and Red Barchetta and i could probably fake my way through Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio. and i know like a gazzilion PARTS to a lot of their songs.

My son is one of these people who can pick up pretty much any instrument and play it. Unfortunately I cannot even play the piano. I have trouble keeping a beat. I do love to listen to my son and his girlfriend play the guitar, the loot, violin, piano or keyboard and organ. They are expecting their first baby and they plan on getting the baby into playing music at a young age.

I think the love of music and the type of music a person listens is also inheritable.

Yeah, it doesn't help at all when you're dad is Geddy Lee, for example, if you don't like music at all yourself... But I think it is inheritable because many children of musicians also try and usually get a musical career...

In fact, piano is a pretty hard instrument... But some people just have the gift of being musical and those who don't have it, can't learn it, no matter how hard they try. I think that the baby will have be pretty musical if the parents are. My dad is also pretty musical so I think it's a pretty heritable thing.

I am hopeless when it comes to playing any instrument. It is great that you can play the different instruments. I have always wanted to learn to play the piano but never was able to tale any lessons.

Yep and I truly enjoy listening to music. It soothes the soul and tames the beast sometimes. I like to listen to music if I am sad, mad, or glad and when I don't I feel so disconnected with everything. like the beat of the music is what makes me stay going.

I usually listen to music anytime, no matter what's my mood I guess, music is what keeps me going too, without music, I wouldn't know what to do and would probably be pretty bored and maybe even sad.

I didn't play any musical instruments when growing up however I did take piano lessons. That was a big joke since my heart wasn't in it and all it did was irritate me. I was too young to sit and learn. Today I'm sorry I didn't pay attention and take it further. My father played the bass fiddle for many years and worked with such greats as Judy Garland, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, Rosemary Clooney and many others. Later on in life he worked locally, in the St. Louis area, and played many private country clubs. He began his musical career as a drummer and singer way back in the 1920's or early '30's in Atlanta.

I was 8 yrs. old when I took lessons. I wanted to be outside playing ball with the boys in the neighborhood. That was my first priority. Looking back, it was a mistake. I will probably never go back to trying to learn even though I have an electronic keyboard in the house. Will give to our granddaughter who will be born the end of next month or the first of Nov.

Well, you can start playing piano again, it's never too late. And if you have took some lessons before, I'm sure you'll not have any big problems learning it again.

Hey it's great to hear that we have a true blood bass player on myLot. That is cool!!! I used to play rhythm guitars, done vocals, sometimes play the bass and the drums. That was way back when me and my friends were into rock and heavy metal stuff. Without thinking of we ever get our songs recorded it was one of the most fruitful experiences in my life. A way that I could drown my sorrows of a terrifying life of poverty for me and the rest of our poverty stricken country. I loved playing rhythm guitars and I was cut out to be on the lead guitar. I like bass too coz it's one that does get everyone into the rhythm and specially with the beat of the drums. Bass and drums to be is a perfect duo. Awesome dude!!! Cheers!

Well, it's nice to have that kind of a multi-talent here too I play drums too sometimes but since I don't own drums, I play them pretty seldom. Happy posting and ROCK ON!

Hell yeah an I'm a bassist as well. It started in middle for me but it was on and off it was till 2 years ago now (I'm now 26) and I started playing the crap out of my bass and started to do some really cool stuff. I play with a three finger technique, tapping, slap and pop, etc. I even play interval chords on bass and make it sound very guitarish. I love the bass!

Wow, sounds great! I only use two fingers since I have never learned to play with three very well. But I can play very fast with only two so I don't think I even need to learn three finger technique...

Dunno what video you saw but trust me, it was complete bullsh*t... Steve plays with only 2 fingers. Here's the proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajD1duxKSuE (at about 1:50) In fact, you don't need to be a very experienced bassist to play fast with 2 fingers, it depends on what technique you learn to play with. I never learned to play with 3 fingers so it's a lot easier for me to play fast with only two but if 3 fingers were more natural to you than 2, well, then it might be pretty hard for you to play with only 2. But it doesn't really matter that much...

Oh day if you can play really fast with two fingers thats awesome. I learned how to play with three fingers because of a Youtube video I saw based on Steve Harris's three finger technique. Its funny I'm not even an Iron Maiden fan but its funny how the bassist of Iron Maiden is the reason why I play three finger styled bass. I only recommend trying it because I have moments in time where one of my fingers hurt like hell from playing (like the actual bone) where I have switch it up and replace fingers. Just a suggestion though other than that I'm guessing you're a more esxperienced bassist than I.

THe Bass player in the church was working in a shifting schedule making him inconsistent in playing with the group. And I was the sole guitar player at that time, they had no choice, I was sent to the stage and gave the church a rocking beat.

hi! I used to be a guitar player in my amateur years in a group. who would want to play bass that only support the drummer and only play basic notes? but when my father recruited me in his showband i was forced to be a bassist. i was not good enough as a guitarist. being in a showband requires skills that can play any song of any genre. so i was stuck in a bass. after years of being a bassist i still like the guitar but i'm still not good enough. i still think bass are for musicians whose fingers are not fast enough for licks and solos. but there are a few exceptional bassists who proved me wrong ex; Billy Sheehan, Mark King, Flea, Stu Ham, and Alex Sklarevski to name a few. i'll never be as good as them but hey, i only play for fun.

In fact, you sometimes have to be a lot better to play bass than guitar, depends very much on the genre... Take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHPhyRyGAfc

Yeah, RHCP is so great to play. I don't really like that genre so much but I play their songs just because of the bass lines
