They just announced today in our local newspaper that Extreme Makeovers Home Addition is coming to town and knocking on someone's door on Sept. 30 to surprise them with the makeover!! It will certainly be a boost for our community and for some lucky family that desperately needs help....and of course I hope to catch a glimpse of Ty Pennington.....though I have seen him before. I think it's wonderful news. Has something like this happened in your community? Do you know someone that is deserving for an effort as big as this?

Oh man do we qualify but here in Canada I doubt that'll ever happen. I love that show and cry every time.

Just a idea but maybe write some of your local TV channels or producers and see if they will start up a show like that. Tell them you would like to be the first or you know someone that deserves to be first!

How exciting. I love that show. Yes, I do know of someone who is deserving of this but they have already done a home for a family with a child who has the same handicap as the young couple that I know. Hey give a shoutout to Ty from all his fans here on mylot if you get a chance.

While I would never deny anyone the opportunity to better their home I think the show is nothing more than "Look at me. I helped these people. See me help these people." from the show.
Truly wanting to help doesn't mean exploiting the problems of a family.

From what I understand they have changed the requirements of the show to those that need it to those that deserve it like Vern Yip's deserving design. They are doing it for someone who has really reached out in their community to help others...I think too many of the previous ones couldn't afford the house after it was done...some were so big once they finished they couldn't even afford the utilities.

Most of Deserving Design recipients don't deserve anything so doesn't sound like an improvement at all.
I still say it is a "Look what I did" boastfest.

I used to tell my son that I needed that. But then my family moved to a place of there own. And I got a smaller house so I couldn't tell them yes ever again. Then I took in a homeless man that I knew from 16 years ago. And now his son so he can go to collage and get his life turned around. They took my old home and made a bike trail. So that is how I ended up with this house. with a dirt room in basement. Now that I have my mind back and I'm over the fact they took my house. I got mad and ended up in a smaller house with a dirt room in basement. My house is old 1915. But back to you. Yes they had that one family where the sister took in her sister's kids after she was killed. I don't remmeber what subburb it was. Here in Minnesota. I think what they do is great but. There are some of the house's they could give to someone else. There house's are just to small. But then it is cheaper to knock them down then to move them. As it takes less then 8 hours to knock down a big house. And do the clean up. If you could get me a new basement that would be great. lol. your friend onlydia

There was a add. Put on to this house and everytime the wife would ask the husband to paint or do other work he would go into basement and one day they had a hole new room. He dug out under the add on and there you have it a dirt room. Bolder and all. lol. Didn't know would be a pain until after I bought it. Guess who get to fill back in and put wall back up. Men. lol

This is great news for sure! I am so happy for the family that got picked! yes we had them in the area before. It is a awesome way for the whole community to come together. It will really help with sales in your area. Lots of hotel room being booked. People going out to eat.
When they were here. Lots of the local restaurants donated food to the workers! I heard that several of the neighbors got paid for being inconvenienced because they do block off roads. And people had to walk tot he next street over to get to their cars.
No one seemed to mind much.. and there is so much excitement!

Hello jillhill. They did one in a town close by. I think they did for a little girl who has trouble breathing outside or something. But I think a year ago, they had to give up the house because they can no longer afford to live there. I also read about one where another family tried to sell the makeover house because they can't afford it anymore too but the company or I think it was a church that donated the land had the rights to that land, and not them.
I think such acts are noble and helpful. I just wonder what happens if the family can no longer afford to pay the bills and taxes with getting such a house.

From what I heard today they are going to do it more like the Vern Yip show called deserving design.....they are picking out people that have given alot to the community....I had heard that too that many couldn't afford to live in it once they rebuild it....some are so big I wonder how they pay the utilities!

A project was just completed last week in the St. Louis area. Don't know if it was sponsored by Extreme Makeovers but do know the family has 3 children and was in desperate need of a home with wheelchair access. Two of their three kids are severely handicapped and require wheelchairs. It took four days to complete with workers working 24/7. Somehow I missed the showing of the interior when it was complete but did see the exterior. Makes me proud to be a part of a community who is willing to help a family in need.

Hello Jill. That is so cool that Extreme Makeovers Home Edition will be providing someone with a new home in your town. Are you going to try to go over and watch them do it? How fun would that be? Hmm, I can't think of anyone that has done something that is just so remarkable that it would warrant getting a new, free home. I've not known of anything like this happening where I currently live.

I dont think Home Makeovers has been around here but they were in farmville virginia like an hour and a half from here. I didnt know about it though until it came on TV the night it was on. It was really cool to see. I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in this county and a woman and her two kids were just placed in a beautiful little house. They were so happy. It was a long time coming.

That would be great! and it's for free, right? We have a similar program here in the Philippines in which the host visits someone who had a wish and will be granting his/her request. "Wish ko Lang". The benefeciaries are usually indigent persons who needed all the help they can get. Sometimes watching the programs makes me teary-eyed. It is good to know that there are still people who care about others' welfare. All the best.
