Did you know most people have an above average number of feet?

saying it that way makes a heck of alot more sense. Your comment could considered wrong if you had had the words both with...because amputees are born with the normal number of feet..

OK: Most people have 2 feet. Some people have 1 or no feet- amputees etc. Having more than 2 feet is incredibly rare indeed. Therefore the mean is less than 2. It's 1.99999999999999 something. Most people (ie. more people than not) have more than 1.9999999999999999 feet. Therefore most people have more than the average (mean) number of feet.

Sorry, I don't quite understand your comment here. If I'd said what? Thanks in advance for clarifying.

ummmm......yeah.......i don't get it. must be one of those brain twisted riddles wrapped in an enigma things that only YOU know what you're talking about but don't want to share with the rest of us so we don't know what the heck you're talking about. now don't you feel smart???

Don't worry sonibear, I'm not in the habit of posting on internet forums to make myself feel smart. My motivation to write the thread was to make a point about statistics. And in particular statistics as used by the media. My headline is sound, as I hope you will now see. But it's soundness relies on a deliberate ambiguity.

Your comment makes absolutely no sense. Average is average, how can 'most' be more than average? Even if you were talking about something other than feet that humans only have two of, your statement just doesn't make sense. And it's not much of a discussion.

'Average' isn't 'average'. 'Average' comes in many flavours. And it does make perfect sense and is a true statement of fact.

in vertical growth, is that what you mean? I'll bet you are really getting a good laugh out of this post. Of course I want to know what you are talking about.

No nothing to do with vertical growth, but I like your out-of-the-box thinking. ;-) It's not cryptic. I really do mean that most people have a number of feet which is greater than the average (mean).
