My 17 year old daughter came home from school the other day and told me what some scientists are doing that very well may cause the end.I am not sure what I think of it and am wondering if anyone here has heard about it.She says there are scientists that have started something to do with atoms making them spin until they reach the speed of light. It will take about a year for this to happen, when they reach the speed of light they will reverse them.Other scientists say that when this happens it will cause an explosion which will create black holes and the earth will fall into it.I am kinda laughing at myself as I am typing this when she was telling me about it I got a little nervous. Now that I am typing it hear it sounds silly.I think I am going to look into it online and see if there is any truth to it.I don't know why a teacher in school would tell them about this if it weren't true though.Has anyone hear heard of this???

There is a currently ongoing experiment with CERN in which they'll use a particle accelerator to create what we believe to be the conditions of the universe immediately after the big bang by colliding two speeding particles together. Well, that's the simplified version of it, anyway. There's no need to be concerned for your safety, however. Experts have assured us that the experiment is quite safe.

There are no scientist doing what you described. Last week the news reported on the completion of the CERN supercollider. Tis will accelerate protons to close the speed of light and they will collide with each other. From this, the scientists can learn about the forces of nature that keep the atoms together. This sort of thing has been done for decades. The difference now is that the collision will occur at higher energies. The protons that collide are so small and there are so few of them, that you wouldn't even be able to see them with the naked eye.
No black holes are being created and not atoms being smashed. These rumors remind me of that game, where you sit in a circle with a bunch of friends. You say something to the person next to you, and then they do it to the next and then the next. By the time it gets back to you, you don't even recognize what they are saying.

You are entitled to your opinion, and as I said I am only repeating what my daughter is learning in SCHOOL.I do believe that the films she has been shown do describe exactly what she came home and told me.I am not saying that it is going to happen, just that she is learning about it in school, other scientists have said that what they are doing WILL cause these black holes. So you are one person with one opinion, and her science teacher is another person with films that are showing other scientists opinions. Not people sitting in a room whispering to each other and starting rumors.
