Living in the past--no power for nearly 4 days!

Thanks to Hurricane Ike, many of us here in Ohio lost power on Sunday afternoon. Luckily, I was prepared with candles, flashlights, a month's supply of canned food and bottled water, and games/books. Still, Mom and I were inconvenienced. It was nice to sit by candlelight and talk till bedtime but I had trouble sleeping without my fan for "white noise". The weather was nice and cool so we weren't cold or hot and breezes kept the house fresh. Neighbors were very nice and helpful, so I count this as a blessing rather than a bad thing. Anyone else "up" here lose power or suffer otherwise from Ike? I'm glad I had this "dry run" to test my preparedness!

We are in southern ohio and we did not lose power but the winds were unreal! Last year when we had the ice storm and lost power me and my kids played monopoly by candlelight for 4 days. Needless to say we've not played it since them! LOL So I guess my plan would be candles, flashlight, radio, batteries and yep monopoly! LOL

We played cards, backgammon and a game called Mille Bornes, a racing game played with cards where you race and play mileage cards and your opponent can give you flat tires, wrecks, etc. It's fun! I always had fun with the kids when the power was out, at least in the winter in Arizona. When we lost power the other 9 months of the year, it was hurry to a hotel and air conditioning!

You know, its funny, but I always forget about our northern neighbors that are NOT on the coast when it comes to hurricanes and tropical storms/depressions. I forget that the storms always go NE once the hith the gulf and make landfall. It is nice that you are prepared for times like these. In 2004, we had no power for 5 days EACH time we were hit boom boom boom with the hurricanes. It was not fun. Nice to have you back

Thank you! I always felt bad for those in Florida. I mean, it's not somewhere I like to live but lots of people do and they take the hurricanes in stride. 2004 was a horrible year, my mom was weeks without power (she was 79 then) and it was so hot. That's why she's now with my during the hurricane season!

i'm so sorry to hear that you have to endure living without electricity for nearly 4 days... that might be really horrible... i was wondering though, where did you do your mylotting now if you say that you have no power in your place??? anyway, i'm glad that nothing happened to you and your family because of hurricane ike... i know how devastating it might be for many people because of this hurricane... take care and have a nice day...

We got our electricity back about 14 hours ago. Till then, no computer! It really wasn't that difficult, I was prepared with food, water, batteries and a crank radio but it was inconvenient. There were many people that had none of the things I had put aside for an occasion like this, they never plan ahead. Mostly young couples and single people. The neighborhood helped each other out, though, so nobody suffered greatly.

I know a few people up in Texas that were affected by Ike && lost some power for a while. They say that it's always good to have a supplies of candles, flashlights, canned food && bottled water throughout the year no matter where you live. I would concider you blessed, some people wait until the last minute && then have nothing && would be sitting in the dark not knowing what to do next. I went through that bad winter storm last year in OKlahoma && lost power for a whole week && it was awful because it was freezing cold && we had no heat. We used our gas stove, thank goodness for gas! But we were still freezing && had to wear layers of clothes! I think the only thing that saved us was our stove being gas && we were able to cook on the stovetop. Plus I had lots of candles && the kids kept entertained by flashlights! LOL! I would advise everyone to go out the minute they can, when they have extra cash && buy some good candles && flashlights with lots of batteries! Have a safety box put away just in case. You just never know.

It's bad enough in good weather, but in the winter?! One of the reasons I bought this house is because it has a gas fireplace that will keep me warm should something like this happen in the winter time. I'm glad you were prepared and could keep from freezing. I have my emergency supplies plus a backpack stocked with everything I need if I have to grab it and go for some reason-I can survive independently for at least a week with its contents.

I live in Western Pennsylvania and we lost power sunday night around 8:00pm. I was mad because the football game was coming on lol. We didn't have power for 3 days, and there are still people in my county who do not have power until this weekend. We went to my fiances mothers since she had power. We had to move all of our food up there so it didnt go bad. Our county has been placed on a county of emergency list. Right now we have to conserve our water since it is limited right now. We have a lot of damage, and a lot of downed trees. We had 60mph winds, that caused a lot of damage all around us. So for now we are just cleaning up the mess that Ike has left for us. And thankfully no one was injured during the storm.

I had no idea it reached as far as PA! I'm very glad you didn't lose any lives, we lost 5 or 6 here in Ohio. Weren't those winds scary? I can't imagine why anyone would stay in a hurricane as they do when there's a chance to evacuate!

Here in Minnesota the remains of tropical storms etc seldom affect us as badly. We do get some rain but nothing serious from them. I would go nuts 4 days without power. I go nust for a few hours without it. Glad things are good over there in Ohio. Nothing happening here weatherwise. Not much rain all year for us Minnesotans. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!

I've heard that little rain and the leaves turning soon like they are usually means a harsh winter. Now that I know I'm ready for a power emergency, I won't worry.

Hurricane Ike - Tue Sep 16, 11:18 PM ET

HOUSTON - The death toll from Hurricane Ike has risen to 48.

Authorities said Tuesday six more deaths are being blamed on the storm in the Houston area, bringing the number of people killed in Texas to 17. The remnants of the storm killed dozens more as they moved across the country.

Many of the deaths in Texas have happened in the days after the storm because of falling trees or carbon monoxide poisoning caused by improper generator use.

Others have come from fires caused by candles in powerless homes.
When I was young we experienced storms and blackouts and we always have our candles, flashlights and food ready and it didn't bother me if we don't have fan because the weather was cold what bothered me was the mosquitoes. I am glad the hurricane didn't struck you guys that bad out there. We don't have hurricanes in our country just storms and it's not that bad in where we are. Well you all take care out there. It's always good to be prepared at all times.

You'd be surprised how many people aren't prepared for things like this. I grew up here and recently moved back and we used to have power outages in the winter and summer mostly. I learned to always be prepared. Mosquitoes drive me nuts! This summer we haven't had many and I've only been bitten once. Thanks for your reply!

Hello from waldo . ohio we lost power on sunday afternoon ,I had also heard we were to get some winds but I had no idea what we were in for. we went 24 hours with out power. Its just my husband and I here so sunday evening we sat at the table and talked , than we played cards for a couple hours, also had a candle lit bowl of cereal lol. It was a good time for us to reconnect as we spend so much time on the computer. We lost a few shingles , but the neighbor hood sure is a mess.

These things can be a blessing or a curse, and it looks as if we made it a good thing. I'm glad you and your husband had some good quality time. My mom and I didn't enjoy it exactly but we did have some good talks and caught up on our reading. The dogs were bewildered! I'm also glad you weren't damaged aside from the shingles. Some people had trees fall on their houses and a fire chief near here (Springfield) lost his daughter and son in law when a tree fell on their motorcycle during a parade.

Though I've not experienced Ike, my family have experienced not having power for 3 days. It was because our main line got busted ~ it actually melted due to some reason, paperworks and the process of fixing took 3days, so we had no light for those days. It was even funny because we're the only one in our block. The experience was also a blessing because we have been inclined to use the internet the whole time we are at home, we tended to just focus on the internet in our rooms and had no more time to talk to each other. Each were busy doing something and using technology. The event gave us time to do a much awaited chitchat and joking around and everyone was forced to join in because we had no other means to entertain ourselves. The nights were okay because it just so happened that time/season was rainy, no problems on mosquitoes and heat, we had candles and rechargeable lamps with us. It was indeed a good experience for the whole family.

I really think things like this are blessings if you're prepared and are in no danger. My mom and I enjoyed talking--I'm usually working on my writing and myLot and she likes the games and watching baseball. We talk a lot but not like when the power was out, by candlelight and her remembering her childhood in the 1920's. I hope your family continues to entertain each other. A half hour a day or an hour spent together before bed or after dinner would be wonderful and bring you closer. The internet is wonderful but we do tend to let it push us apart from other, real people right there in our houses.

I wondered how you faired up there. We lost power at 1:30 Sun afternoon and it came back up Tues morning about 6:20. I had no idea we were expecting that at all, I just heard 'wind advisory' - and it never did get all that windy here. I'm just on the line between Chillicothe and Frankfort, and I guess Chillicothe got hit pretty bad in town, so that affected all of us. I guess most of it is back around here, but I know north of us there are still tens of thousands still without, but more crews have come in from several states and they're hoping that the next 24 hours will see a lot more power restored. I haven't been into town yet so I don't know if everything is fully back in Chillcothe, but I've got to make a quick trip this morning so I guess I'll find out.

I read that wind advisory on my WeatherBug Sunday morning and thought well, big deal, so we'll have some wind. Hope your area has fared well and the city isn't a big mess. My neighborhood was virtually untouched except for the power. All around us, trees were down and roofs damaged but my street fared very well, thank God.

We went without power from Sunday at 1:30pm until Monday night at about 8pm, however some of our neighborhood is still without power and our schools are still closed. My hubby did get lucky and get to go back to work today. I'm also somewhat glad to of had this test, it let us know we would manage through something like this even when we never would of expected it to happen. We had a lot of damage in our area also, lucky for us we just lost our shed roof and had a significant amount of brush and debri in our yard. My heart pours out to all still without due to this hurricane, especially those in the hardest hit areas in the south. I think it was definitely a learning experience for a lot of people here in Ohio...

Yes, if we learn from it, it will have been a good thing. I'm surprised it took so long to get my power back but then, Ohio isn't accustomed to sustained winds like we had. I can't imagine, having been through that wind, how anyone can even think about staying when a hurricane threatens! Especially when they have children.

It's not that bad, is it? A little inconvenient, but all in all it's a pleasant life. Hey, I think I hit the wrong button and didn't rate you a "+" as I intended. My hands are a little shaky today for some reason. If I did the "-", please forgive me, I didn't mean to!

I never yet experienced the huricane but you are thankful that you are all safe. Only the power of electricity was off.And then you are prepared of that time for huricane. Sometimes it feel strange that you only uses candle and no noise around of stereo and your not typing the keyboard. But the important is your all safe.

Yes, it was very strange. I still find it hard to believe that a hurricane hundreds of miles south of us could affect us so strongly! Nature is incredible and wonderous.
