What is Surreal, and why do we experience this state ?

Most of us have experienced it. I get it whenever I meet a new idol of mine in person and spend time with them ... I wish it didn't happen because it spoils the 'live' occurance somewhat, and its only later on that I realise the enormity or magnitude of what has happened - subjectively of course. But, how on earth do you define exactly what 'Surreal' is? What is it? What is happening to us during a surreal period? Any information, neurologists included, would be most welcome.

Do you mean when you feel like you're not really a part of everything, like you've taken two steps back from everything and you're just watching like it's all just a drama unfolding in front of you. But you're not really involved just kind of witnessing it and just seeing what's actually happening, like all the layers of emotion and meaning and everything just dissappear for a minute and all there is left is whats actually physically there.

Absolutely I mean what you have just described. Excellent description. But why does this happen?
