Britain has given us many great writers, but the cream of the current crop, for my tatste, is Terry Pratchett.
Imagine Doudlas Adams without the world-weary cynicism. The Discworld series is political satire at its very best, entertaining, funny, and often tear-producing as he throws in phrases, paragraphs, or sections that show immense wisdom, an immense understanding of the human condition, an often examples of the nobility the human race can occasionally produce.
His childrens' and young adults books are also superb, readable for adults as well. Take my advice, go to your library and get a Pratchett. (If you are a cynic, don't bother, he'll probably only infuriate you.)

Yes, I enjoy them (have you read the Tiffany Aching series?), but my favourites are probably the books with Sam Vimes, Carrot, and Angua. And the librarian, of course (ook).

I love the books of Terry Pratchett. So much so that I am now buying them for my brothers as presents to get them to read them.
I just love the way he satirizes our society and I love his humor. It is so refreshing to read one of his books. I read one recently which was a very clever send up of the Omen movies.
I also love his discworld series. I was upset when I got to the end of the series and ran out of books to read. Oh well it will not be long before I can start the series again and re read all of his books.
