As a school bus driver, I wanted to make a difference to the children on my bus. I really can't say I remember who my school bus driver was when I was growing up. But I drove for 12 years and loved it. I didn't have a whole lot of problems with my kids. I would see them at school functions and even around town and they would come running up to me to say hi and to show their parents who their bus driver was. Now that I have been retired for 6 years, these kids are now in high school and some have even graduated. They still stop and say hi to me when they see me. I really grew to love those kids and hope I made a difference in their lives.

I remember two. Where I come from there are no school busses, we have to take the public ones. I remember one of them was supernice and even let you ride if you forgot your bus pass. The other one was extremely rude and once even wanted to kick me off the bus because I didn't make room fast enough for his girlfriend (not that he was young, in fact he was married, but everybody knew that she was his girlfriend), when she came on the bus (let me add that there was hardly any room to go, the bus was full). He also didn't let us on, if we forgot the pass, even though he knew we had one. I think he hated his job. You must have had a regular route. My oldest just started second grade and has met three bus drivers thus far. They are all very nice and quickly knew the kids by name. We have to walk to the bus stop a block away, so I know all of them because I'm not letting my kids go and stand at a busy "lead out of the subdivision" road all by themselves. But I think our route must be a bit exhausting. The bus is always very full with the Kindergarteners and first graders often sitting three to a bench. There are also some kids with emotional problems. I remember another student from my oldest Kindergarten class had to meet with the principal because he was acting up too much. Then he was removed from the bus and his mom had to drive him. I don't think he was ready for school yet. My second child just started Kindergarten and had to sit next to a boy on the bus, who kept poking an pinching her. Three days ago, he started spitting on her as well. My girls said he does that all over the floor, too. Well, apparently the bus driver had enough, too, and knew that my daughter was scared of riding the bus now. So that boy was removed, too. But you are right, when they see the bus driver outside of school (not only this one but also the old ones) they immediately run over. I think it takes a special person to drive a school bus and am grateful that there are people who take on the task and manage to remain calm. I think I would go stir crazy. A sack of fleas must be easier to transport;)

I do remember my bus driver from school. His name was Frank and he was always picking on me and making me laugh. I was one of the first stops in the morning and one of the last after school, so I spent a lot of time harassing the poor man. I still say hi and chat for awhile when I see him out somewhere.
