I make bread from scratch. I even grind my own wheat. The recipe I have I like but it takes a lot of shortning to make up and be any good. Id love to find some new recipes that I can make up that are healthier. I do not have a bread maker, I bake it in the oven, so that changes the recipes I can use. I like to make at least 3 to 6 loaves at a time if possible. Do any of you bake bread? Do you know any tied and true good recipes?

i do not bake my own bread but i did try once and here is the recipe, it was given to me by a friend and it is called Amish Friendship Bread 1 (.25 ounce)package active dry yeast 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees) 3 cups all-purpose flour 3 cups white sugar 3 cups milk in a small bowl, dissolove yeast in water. Let stand 10 minutes. in a 2 quart container combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. mix thoroughly or flour will lump when milk is added. Slowly stir in 1 cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Cover loosely and let stand until bubbly. consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle. Leave loosely covered at room temperature. On days 2 thru 4; stir starter with a spoon. day 5; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. days 6 thru 9; stir only. day 10; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Remove 1 cup to make your first bread, and give 2 cups to friends along with this recipe. This is the starter now add 1 cup oil 1/2 cup milk 3 eggs and 1 tsp vanilla to the starter. In a separate bowl combine the following dry ingredients and mix well 2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 (5.1 oz.) box instant vanilla pudding and 1/2 tsp salt. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix and pour into two well greased and sugared bread pans. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Hope this helps. You can just triple this to make more loafs.

I use a bread maker which seems to make pretty good bread to me but my experience does not extend to doing it the old fashioned way, so I can't make a direct comparison. My mother, who was a cook when she was in service during the war (WW2 that is) used to bake bread every day, but she never did so in later years. To much work I suppose.

It is a lot of work. A while back we needed to make bread so we could stick to the budget, so I did. Now things are getting tight again so I am going to begin baking again. It all adds up and it all helps.

I do bake my own bread but I don't grind the wheat as we wouldn't even be able to buy just wheat where we live :) I do not have a bread maker and would never buy one either because I have heard from others that the bread is never as good . Even though it takes me a lot longer and is more work to make it from scratch , I know it will taste good and it won't go bad on me . I usually do the same as you make three to six loaves at a time . I have not made any in awhile but have been told that I can make really good bread . I don't eat it myself so I have to go on what others say . It is the one thing I am able to bake as I am not much of a baker because everything seems to flop on me but my bread does always come out looking good :) I usually call my cousin and use her recipee as I am no good at haning on to recipees for the simple fact that I rarely bake so I don't have a recipee to share .

The bread never is the same in a breadmaker. If I needed just a loaf here and there I think a breadmaker might work, but I pack two bag lunches each morning and one small loaf would never do. My grandma makes a great loaf of bread but she learned from here mom who learned from her mom and there was never a recipe involved. When she tries to write it down it never quite works the same.

I have a bread maker. So making a bread is a piece of cake for me. Perhaps later I will try to make the bread by the oven and see whether its result will be better. I love China

I make a lot of sandwhiches so the breadmaker does not work to well for me. I hate that they have not figured out how to make a loaf with out a hole in the middle.

Never tried baking bread myself. Although I have eating just baked bread and its delicious =D. Compared to the packed bread's you buy in a store, you just can't compapre the texture, the aroma, the taste, well everything about it . I would definitely try to learn someday how to bake my own bread. I'd do bread for everyday since I like to eat eat with anything I have in the fridge xD.

Fresh bread is great but does not have the same shelf life as store bought bread. I figure there are a lot of preservitives in the store bread. I can get about 5 days out of my bread until it is just better for toast.
