What kind of "laws" govern the world of Spirits/Ghosts?

In terms of early-afterlife/Earthbound ghosts... what kind of laws govern their world, like they can do or can't do and why not? For instance (and this is partly from my experience)... Why are they not in control of when they are able to appear to you? Why is it that when they're invisible and they talk, it sounds too low or far away when they're right there in the room? Why is it that when one of them dies from suicide, they're stuck in one place (i.e. the house of their loved one) and can't go anywhere else cuz outside its all darkness, a black void? Like they're in their loved one's actual house but outside there is no ground, sky, moon, etc. just a dark void. Is it like another dimension or something? Does anyone have any details about how their "world" works?
