Mystery of the Hickory

About an acre from us (from the edge of our yard) is about an acre of trees.. or there was. We've been hearing them bulldoze and cut down trees for the last week or so. They started from the middle, so we haven't known what they were doing.. Someone said they were making it easier to get around the area with their tractors, as like us, it's along the road in the middle of farm fields. Today, however, I can see through our trees, that they have cut down all the trees! All that is left standing is the biggest one, a hickory still standing at the front corner of the field closest to us. I am dreading to hear that last tree fall.. And now all is silent.. they've gone away for lunch.. and there that lone tree stands.. I'm hoping they will leave it there! What are the odds, do you think? What do you think? Will they let it stay? (Is it good luck to leave one tree in a field?? I'm hoping so!)

Wow...that is really sad. I hate to see trees go, especially the big, old ones. It seems like being around for that long, the must have so many memories. If the hickory is at the very corner, and they haven't cut it down yet, maybe they will leave it. If it isn't in the way of anything there wouldn't be any good reason to cut it down. I guess you could always "go out on a limb" and go talk to the construction crew when they get back from lunch and ask if they could please leave that one tree there. I have no idea if there are any superstitions or traditions about leaving one tree in a field, but I hope so too! Good luck.
