Since living green is something many of us are thinking about, how do you feel when you see people wasting things? You know, like throwing out a perfectly good chair to buy a new one or putting a TV that works out by the curb to be picked up by the garbage men because a new flat screen was purchased?

Hello mokbul. Yes, it does make one wonder how people can keep purchasing so many items and finding places for them and ways to use them. Maybe it's like you are saying, they have so much money that they don't know what to spend it on. Thanks for your response.

I don't even like to see people waste food! I grew up on a farm where everything was used and my parents didn't have alot of money....the younger generation has turned into a disposable group! We used to re-upholster furniture now they change very couple of years because they can get a whole set for the same price we used to buy a good couch....they don't think twice about pitching something and even my own kids don't use everything up ....like actually finish a bottle of shampoo..

Hey Jill.
I know what you mean about wasting food. I try so hard not to and I am getting better at that. I still occasionally have produce that goes bad that I didn't cook before it went rotten. I sure hate that.
I can remember my mom throwing a blanket or sheet (very neatly) over our couch or sofa for years to extend the life of it. I even purchased some upholstery material one time and re-covered the cushion of an old, antique wicker chair my husband had when we first met.
Then, I bought some cording and glued it round and round the bottom of the legs of the chair (to make it look like the wicker that was missing down there). Then, I spray painted the wicker part of the chair and you couldn't even tell where I mended it! I was so proud. Put that newly recovered cushion in, and we had a new chair!
My husband has a fit when I keep the same shampoo bottle for weeks after he would have thrown it away. I balance it on its top against the tile wall of the bathtub and keep using it until it's gone. I've even been known to run a little water into the shampoo bottle and get a few shampoos out of that! But, that may be going a little overboard.
Anyhoo, I didn't grow up on a farm but some of the most thrify, smart people I know did. I think it must require a lot of thinking on your feet to live on a farm, with all the problems with the animals and crops that might develop.
Take care.

I think it's sad when people waste things like that when it could be donanted to Good Will or something so someone else could purchase it and use it.
However, one thing that really, really bugs me is when someone wastes food. Like perfectly good food. I used to live with someone that would throw out food simply because they did not feel like taking it home or something whenever it was time for a break. Instead of asking us if we wanted it or could use it, it would just get dumped or thrown away. That bugs me because a lot of people just do not have the money to buy food and they go hungry every single day, but it's OK for her to toss food like it means nothing.

Hello highflyingxange. Yes, I think the freecycle program is pretty interesting and know a few people that have used it and been happy with the results.
Uh oh, I am guilty of throwing out food. I try really hard not to over-buy, but sometimes, I have fresh produce that goes bad and there's just no way we can eat it in that condition. You make a very good point--we can save food and money by being more judicious about the food we buy (and the amounts of it). Food is far too expensive these days to be throwing much of it out. Take care.

Hi PealGrace, It annoys me when people waste things and especially when they update to the latest model and just throw out the old. I put anything than can still be of use on the local Freecycle site after offering to friends and family. I use a basic mobile as all I need to do is make and recieve emergency calls not all the other additions. I recycle clothes that are too old to be given to a charity shop and then bag the rest. I very rarely buy new unless needed. I do have a flat screen TV but that was only because my old one broke and was in fact still under guarantee but no longer available so couldn't replace with the same so the company gave me a credit note and I got a medium size one that suits my room instead. My luxuries for me are bath products and that is where I relax. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie333.
I can get pretty annoyed when people seem to just keep updating everything every couple of years, just because something new just came out. I think the Freecycle thing is great and have taken an older computer and printer to the local facility. I, too, remove old clothing before or at the time that I buy new. And I take the old clothing to the local Goodwill store. We have a flat screen also in our bedroom. After the TV I bought when my son was 12 (he's now 36) bit the dust 2 years ago, we replaced it.
The sheets on our bed actually wore through a few weeks ago. My husband smirked at me and said, "Do you think we can afford to buy a new set of sheets?" (He was trying to be funny). I cut them up and they make the best cleaning rags ever!
