How much should I feed him?

I remember a LONG time ago reading a book called "All My Patients are Under the Bed" by a NY vet who did housecalls (and generally mostly cats.) He recommended feeding cats only human meat baby food...
Well, until I can afford the surgery to get Taj's teeth pulled I've been doing different things to help him eat - including the baby food thing.
So, those babyfood jars are 2.5 oz - so far he's been eating 2 a day - more if I can get him to eat other things. He eats good after the shot at the vet for about 5-8 days.
So, should I feed him more if he wants it - remember these things do cost about a buck each.

Hi ElicBxn,
You can wean them off with adding a little cat food at a time and eventually the cat should be back to eating cat food if the cats are alright ofcouse.

I'd feed him as much as he wants because he's hungry. I mean, you wouldn't want anybody to limit the amount you can have, right? So feed him as much as the little guy wants. How much will the surgery cost? The reason I ask is because I have $10 and some change just floating around in my paypal account, I'd be more than happy to send it to you to help with the cost of the surgery for it has to be right painful for him. Please let me know what your email is so I can send it!

If it's as simple as having his teeth pulled then I'd just book him in for a teeth scale and tell them to remove them while they're at it! Prob cost about $300-400US. Of course I don't know the full story, it is probably much more complicated then just having them removed!

It looks to be about $1000 or so - give or take a hundred. We'll have some money later this year - so its just a matter of getting him to feel good until then.
We're also probably going to be looking at doing it for Solo too sometime, but he's not having all the problems that Taj is.

How many calories does you cat need a day? Is your cat gaining weight, maintaining, or loosing rapidly? Baby food can be made in a blender and you can get recipes off the internet. You can make a bunch up and have it for three days in the fridge, longer in the freezer. There was a baby food maker on sale at Kmart at one point, I believe it included recipes, I bought one last spring, I bought one for someone who was going to have a baby. If you're eating meat and veggies at a meal, just pop some meat and veggies into the blender. Make sure it's veggies a cat can have. Also a little yogurt once in awhile might be a good idea. Using what you're already eating, that would cut down on the cost.
How much do you feed? Depends on the cat and the answer to my first two questions.
I would only feed a cat human meat baby food if a cat was in the same situation as yours, in need of teeth. Otherwise, there are many dry foods that can help a cat keep his teeth. Cats have teeth that cut through the bones of small animals and they, like dogs, are carnivores that need hard surfaces to cut through to keep their teeth strong. I hope people don't start feeding perfictly healthy cats baby food. A vet is seeeing sick animals. Mine is healthy.

He could stand to gain some weight.
He's a good boy, but I guess I'm going to have to dig out my blender and see what I can do. I'm not too worried about the other stuff, because he is still getting some canned cat food too, when he'll eat it.
Part of the problem is that his teeth are strong and healthy - in the middle of his sore, raw gums, poor baby, so I'm going to have to do something as soon as I can afford it.

You may need to get your cat a multi-vitamin formulated for cats. They can't make their own taurine which is an amino-acid they need. If the food you give provides it, then you don't have to worry about it. Taurine is also in some of the cat milks, read the ingredients to make sure it's in yours. Also cats need calcium and other things. So a liquid multi or a crushed dry multi snuck into the food would be something to consider. Otherwise your cat could end up with a vitamin deficiency.

yeah. pets know how much to eat and how much not to eat. they will stop when they r full. they will tell u if they r still hungry. if he is still hungry, feed him. when they r full, they will belch or move away from their dish, even if their plate still has food on it.

I've had a few cats that will over eat - since they are pretty fat.
I have a couple of cats that came to us over weight and while they are still on the heavy side, they are less over weight then they used to be.
I free feed dry food - but I don't know how much to feed Taj.

just get him used to eating one can of moisty food or one jar of baby food, and he can snack on dry food as he pleases if he is still hungry. that is all how i feed my pets and they all had a healthy normal weight.

Can he eat cat food with some water added to it? I feed all meat baby food when the cat won't eat anything, but there are nutrients in cat food, like taurine, that a cat must have. I wouldn't feed just baby food for more than 3 days. If you make the canned food the same consistency as the baby food, he shouldn't have trouble with it.
I wish you all kinds of good luck with him. Give him a snurgle for me.

Well, he will eat canned cat food - and likes the shreds, but they sometimes hurt his mouth (like just a moment ago I had to comfort him.)
I think the meat baby food does have taurine in it, its when they try to take cats vegen that cats have a problem getting the taurine in their diets.

I'm not planning on having him on the baby food forever - just until he can have the surgery. And when he feels good, he will put away a can of cat food as well.
Today he's had 2 cans of babyfood and a can of cat food. I t hink he'll be interested in more in a bit.

Not really sure but I did have a friend, the cats would feed themselves. What I mean to say is that the cats figures out where the food was stored. They managed to open the cupboard and open a 10 pound bag of cat food. When he came home from work that day the remaining 5 pounds was all over the kitchen floor...
Healthy for the cat? Ahh no but cats are well cats.

I would be careful about feeding to much just because it may make him feel even more uncomfortable. There is a healthy amount that should be eaten. I would also try to make your own. That way you can add things that the other posters recommended to be sure he gets all the nutrients needed. That might actually be why he seems like he is still hungry.

Well, the vet gave me a "cocktail" that I have to give him including 250 mg of L-Lysine, 250 mg Vit C (mine is with Bioflavonoids and is gently buffered), Echinacea glycerite extract (tho the vet says that it would be better to get directly into his mouth) and we're also putting some Rescue Remedy in it as well.

How are you going to manage , have you planned to feed your cat with so much expensive food items? how long , remember if you give so much place by feeding him tasty things , he will not eat the normal food stuffs later , so dont try to only feed him with those food items , did you consult the vet before coming to this conclusion?

Frankly I cannot help you out, but I've seen all the others doing so. My cats have their rice with milk and fish at intervals. Readymade cat food is pretty expensive here in India. So I give them that just on and off.
What I would like to mention is that after joining in at MyLot, I've found so man people who really do take care of their pets. And this is what makes me so happy.

Why can't Taj eat normal cat food? If it is a teeth problem you could try feeding him Hills A/D can food. It is specifically developed for animals with chewing/swallowing problems. Why is Taj having his teeth removed?

Taj has stomititus - which is a form of herpes and acts like an allergy to plaque - the normal fix is removal of the teeth.
But I just spent $420 on Mitten, and $2349 on my car, plus missed 3 weeks of work because of my surgery - I just can't afford it right now.

There is canned cat food that has a similar consistancy as the baby food and cheaper. Why not feed Taj that instead? By all means, feed him however much he wants on his good days cause on his bad days, he won't be able to eat much and lose weight.

awwwwwwwww poor guy. I hope he isn't lacking a critical nutrient eating the baby food. He sure is handsome, though.

I haven't found catfood with that runny consistancy of baby food. I tried getting some loaf and he seems to prefer the gravy of the sliced or slivered to the loaf stuff.
Last night he ate over a jar and a half of baby food - he was hungry!

It sounds like you are feeding him soft foods that are kind of runny so he can just lap them up? I had a Siamese that had digestive problems and I was feeding her baby food with tuna mixed in. I also would buy a container of chicken livers, boil them and then puree them in the blender until it was good and runny. I would add canned cat food to the mix and blend really well. It cut down on costs a lot. Also, you can cook up some rice until it is a bit over cooked and blend it in with the mix. It looks awful but it is easy to eat and digest. You might try making a small amount of the mixture and see if he will eat it. If he does it will be an emmensley less expensive way to feed him until he can have the teeth removed. I know that my Siamese thrived on the mixture until her stomach healed.

I'd feed him as much as he wants.
You can also feed him kitten formula in a dish.
Or put regular soft canned cat food in a blender with a bit of water to turn it into mush. That would be the cheapest way to get him to eat enough without breaking the bank.

Anything to get the pills into him. Cat's are a pain to pill. They are just to smart for their own good.
