The Differences between MRI and X-Rays The main differences between an x-ray and an MRI are the images they produce. An x-ray clearly shows the contrast between soft tissue and bone density. That is why it is often used to examine broken bones. An MRI image shows a better contrast between different kinds of soft issue. That is why it produces such detailed images of the brain and other tissues. http://library.thinkquest.org/TQ0312532/thinkquestH1/xray.html

I know they are used for different purposes. I have to have a CT Scan of my adrenal gland once a year. Then I have to have a MRI once a year. Which means I am getting one or the other every 6 months. They show them different things

hi dear fried xrays give limited info since they penetrate the soft tissues and only provide images of the bones ! but mri is an advanced technique which uses magnetic resonance imaging for the softer tissues as well like the brain tissue. it will scan each part very thoroughly and give the images for the physician to arrive at a conclusion!! so it is the latest and show what xrays fail to point out!! if advised you need to go for it!! take care!!
