I have my 9 months old son too. He always crying when i walked out the room and go downstairs but i never take him out from his playpen i just give him toys to play and then he stop crying. When he hears my steps coming up the bedroom he gets excited and screaming. So i guess they just do that because they don't want to be alone and they want someone to play with so they never gets bored.

Yeah i figured that out with my frist son he was like that too and still is in a way he dont like to be left by himself yet hes 2 yrs old and hes right on your heels soon as you walk out the room he thinks your going to leave and go somewhere and he dont like that because he's always wanting to go somewhere dont matter where it is. But we are potty trainning him and he'll tell you to leave the bathroom that he'll call me when hes done he dont want no one in there so i guess thats a good start i suppose

He doesn't understand that when people "disappear" that they're still there. At that age, if they can't see something, it's just GONE. They don't know object permanance yet. He'll learn. Keep doing it for short periods of time. He'll figure out that mommy's coming back. You can also do peekaboo. And cover a toy with a blankie and then take it off. It's normal. :)
