I have experienced very similar symptoms. I used to get very sharp, stabbing pains in my stomach just below my rib cage. Sometimes so severe that I would be in tears. I was diagosed with GERD and prescribed Zantac 75 twice daily. My symptoms have greatly improved. I rarely get the pain anymore, but now when I do, I take 2 Tums, drink a small glass of milk, and take my Zantac 75. The only time I am in this much pain is when I forget to take the Zantac in the morning. Although this worked for me, I strongly recommend seeing a doctor. It could be something other than GERD.

It sounds to me like you, not only probably have GERD, but you might have a hernia too. You really should get your primary physician recommend a gastroenterologist (stomach/digestive specialist). I had one repaired about 20 years ago - and I'm a girl - we don't usually get hernias! It was called an umbilical hernia. It made a ton of difference in how I digested my food. But, I was also diagnosed with GERD and dysphasia (difficulty swallowing) - I take Prilosec every morning and never have a problem IF I don't forget it! But believe me, the second I eat something I shouldn't have, I am quickly reminded to go get it and take it!
