Being the animal lover I am, I performed a covert operation Friday night.

There is a family fixing up the house next door to ours, and the yard is not fenced between our two houses. They have about 5 small children, the dad had the yard mowed last Thursday, and that afternoon as I sat out on our porch I saw them kneeling down in the grass, and saw him pick something up. Friday, they were standing around that same area and I heard them say something about bunnies! Later after the adults were inside the little boys were over there poking around. I used to raise animals on a small farm we had in Texas, and I have taken care of plenty of orphan animals. I knew the momma bunny would not take her young back after them handling them. I also knew that the bunnies would not survive with those (wild) little children prodding them. So after dark, and after they had left to go home (they aren't living there yet) me, my s/o and his daughter took the flashlight and went on our covert operation, Bunny Breakout. There are 4 of them, little cottontails, approximately 4 weeks old, and fit in the palm of my hand. They are eating well, and have fresh grass in their box. We will be turning them loose once they get bigger and are ready to go back outside. We may be keeping one, the runt, she is eating good, and healthy, other than her back legs are weak. So, have you ever gone on a 'covert' operation to rescue an animal or baby animal?

What?? Someone bought the house next to you that you wanted? How dare them. As for the bunnies, that don't surprise me at all that you went to their rescue. I am shocked though that there was not a picture attached of the little babies for us to see. The only animal out of the wild that my kids ever rescued and I had to take care of was a new born baby calf. She was in my back yard until she got too aggressive for me to bottle feed and then was moved to the horse pens until she was later on traded to a couple for a buckskin horse. We sure did get the better end of that deal.

LOL I just haven't downloaded them yet, but I will be and then I'll post some here to share. I remember the calf in the backyard. And yes, you did get the better end of that deal lol. Yes, the couple sold it to someone else, even though we were in the middle of putting the deal together to sign papers! Not exactly how ya do business in Texas! But, I've seen deals like this up here all the time, it's unbelievable how some people up here are about that kind of thing. But, he has now decided that he wants the other house we looked at ( that I fell in love with LOL), 'gee wish I'd thought of that' came to mind when he said he wanted it LOL

I have never had to rescue an animal covertly, but have rescued several cats, bunnies, and deer where the mother had been tragically killed by a motorist or the babies cat touched by a human and the mother never returned to them. Animals such as the deer and rabbits I turned over to the Fish & Wildlife warden. Cats and dogs I would take care of until a new loving home could be found for them.

Hi palonghorn, wow...that is kind of you! I know there are really people who just don't care about animals or don't educate their kids about taking care and respecting animals wild or not! ANyway, I haven't tried anything like that in the past but I will do the same when I am in the same situation!

I have rescued baby cottontails before, and eventually when they were strong enough and big enough, we would turn them loose.

what a great thing to do. Five bunnies, I love to have some bunnies around but my husband won't agree to it and since I work full time there is no one to and clean up so I don't want to abandon them later on. Good for you.

hi, Jeez yes, my family is always saving animals.A dog owner doesn't treat his dog properly ?? we'll take him in...Bird fell out of a nest and some kid is nearly stranglin it ?? Pop it in the box and we're try and save it...And the best one yet,a couple throws their dog out of the car,the dog runs straight into an electric cow fence and we have the great idea to help the poor animal. But it turns out that he got an electric shock straight in the head and it made him turn weird... so we never actually had to do a covert operation to rescue the animals but we did feel a bit like "animal farm rescue center"

Once I rescued some bunnies, too. I knew the mother had made a nest in the sand around one of my palm trees because I had seen it a few days before. I took a little peak, but didn't touch. A few days later we were expecting a pretty big tropical storm with lots of rain in the forecast. I knew those babies would drown in that hole, so I went out and got them. I brought them to a wild animal hospital that was a short drive away. They kept them until they were ready to be released. My daughter also rescued a duckling not too long ago. We were taking a walk around the pond near our home. She saw a duckling and wanted to take a closer look. I told her that the mother was nearby and would go after her. She slowly got closer and closer and no mother. We got very close and no mother. We continued our walk and came around again. No mother. We were expecting cold weather that evening and I knew that little duckling could not survive alone. We brought it home, put it in a box with a towel and put a desk lamp over the box to keep it warm. The next day we brought it to Silver Springs Nature Park. It's famous for the glass bottomed boats. They said they would raise it and release it. If it chose to hang around it could stay and be fed daily. If it left, that was fine too. It was such a cute little thing. I often wonder why the mother would abandon it.
