Why does it seem some bands are so much more popular in other countries?

Why does it seem so many american bands are more popular in other countries? I mean look at 30 seconds to mars. They are so popular in Austraila and Europe. Not so much in the states. Why is this? In the case of say Silverchair, I can understand why they are most popular in Austraila. But why haven't they been able to get exposure here in the states? Is it harder here than in other countries? I am sure there are other bands in the same situation. What does this say about the music industry?

Different people have different tastes. Or perhaps they didn't do enough promotion in the States. Anyway, they're still a pretty awesome band.
