Do you attend or participate in your local county fair?

Our local county fair which is held right in our town (we are the county seat) is billed as "The most popular fair in the world". This is just a slogan and is part of the tradition of our fair. Our fair started yesterday and is the latest occuring fair of the year in our state. It started with a church service in the bandshell, followed by a talent show. Then there are the usual fair events. Carnival rides, exhibits and "Fair Food"! Because we live in a fairly rural county, the fair is a major event. Many kids are involved in 4-H and even end up missing some school because of it. In fact, all the schools in the entire county had today off for annual "Fair Day". It started today with a parade. My son was in the HS marching band. My daughter and I walked downtown to watch. We brought our dog with us but we left early because he was just plain unruly! He's part Huskey and the cooler weather makes him rather frisky. How about you? Do you participate in your local county fair? Do you enter competitions? Are your kids in 4-H? Do you go for the musical acts? Are there any special traditions associated with your fair? How about the fair food? What's your favorite?

Hi there rocketj1 My eldest son was this year chosen to be a page boy for our old English Fayre and he had certain duties to attend to and I was so proud of him. The next day after the fayre there was a church parade and my eldest had to attend that and my middle son was also marching in that with the Boys Brigade. This Saturday will be our Carnival where my eldest again will be walking through the street in his page boy outfit and my youngest son will be with his preschool dressed as a pirate. I am really looking forward to it.

We have always been associated with our County fair, as a child I showed my horse, and young adults we showed our garden produce, as adults we worked with the square dancing groups, and entered our crafts. Now we enjoy just visiting..

Yes, I have in my life. But, I have not been to one in a while.. I guess because it is not exciting as it was when I was younger.. But, I do plan to take my kids to one.. The county fair starts this week, I believe, in Sumter County. So, I guess I will try to take my kids..

Taking the kids is a whole new way to enjoy the fair. My advice is to check out the special price days for entrance and ride tickets. Otherwise, you can pay an arm and a leg. Thanks:)

I think we only have a few more years left of watching the kids on the rides. My son already goes off with friends when we get there and my daughter is 10 now. That will free up my husband and I to go through the booths. I enjoy the home ec. buildings and the animals (every year I debate buying a baby bunny but I never do). My husband likes the merchants buildings and loves the political booths (he just loves to debate) Thanks:)

We have the State Fair here in our town and it goes on for 11 days, and I go 2 or 3 times and I love it. We have a big parade, and their are plenty of rides and games and entertainment, and food, oh my, the food, everything from great big turkey legs to the usual cotton candy and candied apples, funnel cakes, bar-b-q, burritoes, just all kinds of food. Their is a big rodeo with major bronc and bull riders and such, and of course the 4H animal shows and animal auctions, and the contests for best quilt and jelly and art and sewing and canned goods and all of that. I don't enter into any of that, I leave that part to the experts. LOL This year we had white tigers, a monkey act, a lot of local bands, and the Guess Who, and the Smothers Brothers, and a couple of country western singers as major acts to see. And a lot of vendors selling everything from hot tubs to hats and belts and such, it is just so much to do and to see. And a month after that we have our annual Chile and Frijole festival, which is a lot of the same as the fair as far as food and vendors and local entertainment and this one is a 3 day affair and we go one day for this one. It is just all so much fun for us.

Sounds wonderful! We love the fair too and were very surprised by how important it is for everyone here. We came from a different part of our state and lived near a bigger city. It was a fun thing there but not the major entertainment event of the year as it is here. This is a much more rural community and every one looks forward to it. It's also great because it is a safe atmosphere. In fact, my 14 year old son is there right now. We dropped him off and he hopes to run into some friends there. I'm sure I would not have done that at the fair that we lived near in the past. I know that he is safe here. Thanks:)
