Do you visit your local library?

I have always tried to get my kids interested in books, and wherever we have lived, we have become members of the local library. Today, I went to the nearest library to us with books in English - that of Gibraltar. Now, Gibraltar is small, but is home to nearly 30,000 people - but the library is awful. It has books that must have come out of the ark - for starters, they smell! Most of the children's books are ancient - The Secret Garden, and Enid Blyton ones - not that they aren't good, but nothing written in the last 20 or 30 years! I went to look for some books about computers - ha! there was a book on Fortran and one about IBM PCs. The most recent book in this section was one about Java that was written in 1996. I just thought it really shameful that the most recent book on an ever-changing topic like computers was over 10 years old. How sad, I love libraries, but this one looked as if it were still the 1960s and smelled terribly. Do you visit your library and is it modern?

I occasionally visit my local library. I'm an avid reader and libraries are an ideal place to borrow books and take them home to read without any cost...well providing you return them on time. I used to buy loads of books but at just over ten pounds for a hard back nowadays it works out much cheaper to borrow. The only problem I have with librarys is the quality of the books I borrow. Have lost count the amount of times I have got home halfway through book and a page is damaged or missing or the pages are stuck together with something...infact I don't even want to know what that something is. It's a little off putting trying to get lost in a good novel when you never know what your find on the next page or even if there is one. I must say the Dewy decimal system they use is fairly clear though and the layout of my local library is easy to navigate and find your way around.

Yuk, thanks for that! I try not to think about who else has read the book before me, and what contagious diseases they were suffering from - lol

Wow I am from a smaller town than that and our library is more updated than this seems to be. I take my kids to the library every Thursday evening...It's just kind of an unwritten law here! LOL We spend about 2 hours and if they behave themselves I let them check out their favorite movie afterwards. Does your library have the free movies? Here you can check them out for 2 days at a time and they have great family films there. Call your local officials and find out why this is so. Sounds like this issue needs some attention fast! Maybe they need to look at some fund raising projects for the library or something. Good Luck!

Free movies?? It doesn't have any movies. Thanks for the luck, I'm gonna need it, because you know, I think I'm going to do some writing of letters to people. This just isn't right.

Sorry, forgot to say - every Thursday night with the kids, that's amazing. And well done, sometimes I feel like nobody uses their library but me It's great to read so many people going and using this wonderful resource.

As much as I hate to admit it I don't visit our local library. Although I buy a lot of books for my kids visiting the library is out of the question. It's far from our house and it takes time before I get there. I have my own personal library at home and I try as much as I can to add books at least once every month. For assignments and projects for my kids I'd usually rely on the internet.

That's brilliant that you keep up your own library - if a little expensive!

That's terrible. We have wonderful libraries in our country. Most of the libraries here have been upgraded to have the latest technology installed for public use. Most of the things are automated, including borrowing and returning of books. There are lots of new books in the library as well. If you find that there is a certain book you want to borrow but not available, you can suggest to it to them. They may consider buying it and you can borrow it. I must say that our library is modern. My daughter and I goes there every few weeks to borrow some books. She loves lift the flap and books which has sounds. I need not buy these which can be expensive. I just get them from the library. That's my small way of saving the environment. Every year, the library will sell some books that they no longer want, such as slightly torn books. These go for very cheap, and there a long queues to get the books. But I never went for one, a bit far for me and did not want to have to mingle with the crowd. Hope there is at least a local bookstore at Gibraltar, where you can buy some books. Join Freecycle and ask for unwanted children's books. Maybe somone might respond and give you some. Good luck!

I always liked Singapore! I visited once, years ago, and absolutely loved it. There is a book shop in Gibraltar, but it is very expensive, but they do have Freecycle here - so will try that. Thanks.

Library? I had been a few years didn't visit the library. Because I am working and my working hours was too long and it limit me from reading the best book ever in the world. So if you had the chances to visit your nearest library then please do visit it frequently because knowledge is important than others.

I became very happy that you love going library but it's a sad news that your library is too awfull. your interst of going library is not fulfilling your requirements as I feel. I even like going to library and my local library is full of nice books on every aspect. This has been a good hobby with me since years! Thanks for your nice discussion!

Not having a good library is a real bummer. I use my library ALL the time and fortunately, it is a good one. It keeps the books updated, has a good bank of computers, a great selection of audio books and just about every worthwhile magazine published in America. (Wish they would get some foreign magazines too but I guess you can't have everything from one small town library.) My library also has great book sales three times a week. I sell books for a living and I buy hundreds of the books I keep in inventory at my local library. It's in a wealthy community with more colleges in the area than any other section of America so there are great book donations in fine condition. The one type of donated book I almost never buy is the computer stuff because they get dated so fast, I don't want to take any chances.

Ooh, I'm so jealous of all of you. Audio books - I can only dream! lol I do understand that computers move on really quickly, but they do need to have some books on the subject, one book bought every 10 years, isn't really good enough.

Oh my, this library has no movies, and no music. And although every library I have ever been in within the last few years, has had free internet access - this one doesn't. It is truly appalling.

4 floors! (my tongue is hanging out! Lol) This one is contained in two rooms - one is the reference section, and one is the lending area. You are so lucky. I have used really well-stocked libraries in the past, and truly you don't realise how lucky you are until you go to something like this!

My hubby and daughter go to the library more often than I do. It is their daddy/daughter activity. Although I do quite a bit of reading to my daughter. Most of my reading these days is online.

i love going to the library! it's funny because when i was a teenager, and even in college, it was not "cool" to be caught going to the library to check out books or whatever. lol but i take my sons all the time. there are so many libraries around here for me to choose from. there are 2 within 5-10 minutes of my house that i love bringing the boys to. one has a whole seperate room for kids, with all the children's books and videos and a fish tank, and there is a puppet stand and a whole wooden thomas the train table and set for the kids to play with. the other library close by has an area for the kids with big, wooden blocks and tons of puzzles and little toy cars. even if they just play there, we are still in the library setting. my 3-year old loves to read, as do me and my husband. i am very sorry that you have such a crappy library! that really is sad. one of the best resources for anyone is their local library, and if it is so outdated why would anyone want to use it?

Well, just to let you know, there aren't many people in there using it. I've been there a few times now, and people read the papers and then leave. Also, it's not even open at the weekend! Lol, could it get any worse??

Well..I seldom go to the local library knowdays... When I was a student and the Internet was very expensive at that time..I did go the local library...even though it is hot with no AC. Now I had a great library of my own...the Internet..where you can access it 24 hours a day, no fees, at you own pace and browsing at your own cozy chair with the aircondition on ...

We do use the internet for information gathering, project work, games and other stuff. But sometimes, just looking through all the novels and taking one home with you - it's lovely.

yes, i'd like to read in library for the environment: everyone involve in books. i also have a reading card so that i can enter more rooms in library meanwhile borrow some books home. the most important for your kids is to inspire their interests on books rather than force them to library.well,I think you can find the right way for certain. good luck!

I love the local library and so do both my daughters. Even if you grow tired of all the reading and researching. You then can get audio books , CDs and other items. I think it is a great place to go to pass the time and learn.
