Do You Always LOG OUT When You Leave A Secure Site (Bank, Credit Cards, etc)?

With all the hacking going on these days I am trying to be more cautious and careful when on line. I try to remember to log out of my accounts when I check my banking information, credit card information, make payments on line, etc. Do you log out or do you think just leaving the site and closing that browser window is enough?

Hi ShadyGrove, Is that in PA? I always log out. My son has taught me much about hackers, and site security. It's a habit I got into and will never sway from.

I was born and raised in Plymouth Valley, just outside of Philly. My son would have been a hacker if he didn't have such personal convictions! LOL Have a good one

Thanks for the info ~ I need to be sure to log out all the time -- lots of time I get in a hurry and just forget! You can't be too careful any more these days.

And I always clear all the crap with crap cleaner (www.ccleaner.com) after each day of browsing.

I'm really bad about this and I'm trying to correct myself but it's a struggle. At least half of the time I've closed the page and moved on before I even remember that I was supposed to log off.

That's a problem I have -- I am in and out of sites checking this or that and I leave before I remember! I am trying harder to pay attention though and log out -- I am doing it more often on the secure sites. Thanks for commenting. Judy

My banking site will always prompt me to log off when finished with a transaction,or will require me to re-log in if I'm not quick enough completing a transaction or go afk for a few minutes..I've accidentally closed a browser window on the site in the past, and it'll then tell me on my next log in the time and date of the last access to the site..I'd always completely close down a secure login, even though I'm not using a public or wireless terminal..

I know on some sites that you are automatically logged out after so many minutes of inactivity -- On a couple occasions I left a secure site, went elsewhere, and then hit the back button a few times and was able to end back up on the secure site still logged in! Not a good thing!

Before, I would just close my browser after using a secure site. I thought that they automatically log you out. Then recently, I've been told that some sites don't automatically log you out. I've been trying to make it a habit to log out every time. Not just bank sites though. I also log out my mail unless I'm on my personal laptop.

I never used to worry about it, but hackers are becoming so hi-tech now that I worry they will break in the connection - somehow or someway. I am trying to become more proactive for my account protection.

I think that leaving the page without logging off is a bad idea, because, even if You've told your browser that you've changed page/closed your broswer, the website will not know, until it does its 'online accounts checks' (process where they check every logged on persons to see if they are still active). Between the time you change page and the website actually realizes you did change page, their will be a security breach where an experienced hacker can take control of your account. So, always press the 'log off' or 'sign out' link before exiting a website containing confidential info such as online bank accounts (eg. Paypal), or Email services (eg.Gmail). Cheers..

Thanks for that information -- these hackers are getting smarter every day, even getting into big banks and mortgage companies! Judy
