My family meet up with my sisters and theyre kids to all go together. Does your family go trick or treating? Do you go with other people or just with your own kids? And the big question my oldest asked " mom when am i old enough to go trick or treating with my friends?" Shes only going on 10 so I just said not yet my dear. And this world is a scary place for children. When do you think is safe for them to go without you? And to give you an idea of what its like around here I live in a small town close to lots of farms " we recently moved here from the city" All thoughts are welcome as long as they are polite. Thank you in advance for thoughts and comments.

Well, I am still going trick or treating as a teenager. I'm going as the Joker from the new Batman movie! I'm kind of childish, but I'm not incapable. It really depends on the place you live. Sometimes you just have to let go, though, if you're too overprotective like my mom, you children might end up being unsure of themselves and unsure how to make decisions and be an adult when the time comes. She really babies my oldest brother, who got out of college because their was too much stress, doesn't drive and he's 19, and basically is really dependent on her, I have to say. I'm more independent, but I don't want to be like he is, I want to get out of here as soon as I can. My brothers were not allowed to go trick or treating alone until long after they had any interest in doing that!

I do take my kids treat or treating. I Go with family and some friends that have children do go with and we go as a group jsut because we keep an eye on the children and its better to go with a group than alone. My kids will doutfully ever go with jsut friends i dont trust it to let me children run around in the dark. Just cant risk something to happen i guess you can say.

We all go over to my aunts house because the block has a party. Last year my son went trick-or-treating with different family members 3 times LOL He is 9 but still really attached to our family. We live in an apartment complex, so no real trick-or-treating here. All of the kids will attend the Halloween party the complex throws the night before.

No, I do not let either of my children go out trick or treating. As we live out in a rural area the only next door neighbor we have is our landlord, which means we would have to drive several miles just to get to a neighborhood that has houses close in proximity of one another. Plus with my oldest son being autistic he wouldn't understand the concept of trick or treating. And with my youngest having a sensitive tummy he wouldn't be able to eat most of the treats that are passed out anyway.

Well you have good reasons. Although we no longer live in the city we do live in a small town so My kids should count there blessing because if we would have got the house we really wanted we would have to drive to trick or treat aso. Thanks for the comment.

My daughter is autistic, so I have to go with her. But in the past years I've always taken her trick or treating, as there has been neighborhoods near us where everyone did it, and it was very much like the old fashioned way it was when I was a kid in the 60s. Now we have moved to a small town in NC, and I am wondering if we will find a suitable place for trick or treating. She really enjoys it and it is hard to find things that she can fully participate in. There are lots of kids in the neighborhood here, but I don't know yet if anyone does the trick or treating. As far as your daughter going alone, I don't know if I'd ever feel OK about that. My daughter is 9, and I'm trying to imagine if she were a more typical child, but all I can think of is the older kids are sometimes the ones that cause trouble on Halloween, not to mention the criminal adults. So I think maybe you should at least stay at the end of the street, for every street she goes on. OR, if they have a community party in your area, let her go there alone, but take her and pick her up. Altho I know most of the time Halloween goes by mildly, I have heard too many news stories and rumors. I don't let my pets in the yard, or my child out of my sight, just to be safe. Most shelters won't adopt out black cats for a week before or so, also.

I never heard that they dont adopt out black cats but i can see why they would do that. Normaly all the bad things are done the night before halloween here. like egging peoples house smashing pumpkins things like that. I wouldnt let her go alone every! She just asking about going with out me an going with my sisters kids and her friends which i still feel shes to young for myself. Thanks fot the comments. Wish you and you daughter a fun and safe happy halloween.

I have a 14 year old daughter. Every year, we go with my sister and her kids. Last year, my daughter got to go alone with her friends, only in our neighborhood and had her cell phone. One of the boys they were with was starting to act like a fool so she called me, told me and started heading home. I am just amazed at how trustworthy she is! This year, she hasn't decided. She is kind of in the age that she is a little too old now so we will probably look for a party for her to go to.

I feel the same way about my daughter I was talking about. She talks to me about everything. No matter what it is. That is something I'm very proud of see how she'll soon enough be a teenager. Thank you very much for you great comment. Keep up the good work!

We live in a small town and outside of this town are lots of farms too. the town itself has a small halloween parade where the kids just walk down the street in their costumes to the firehall and the people at the firehall hand out a bag of treats. Then everyone just spreads out and goes trick or treating. they do it during the day time so that it is safer. we go with out kids, but the oldest is only 6 so that makes sense. if it were the day time trick or treating and my kid was really responsible then i would say around 10 or 12 maybe. but i think it is really safe here. we also take them to the town 3 miles away where my parents live to go trick or treating at night. i grew up there, it is really small and safe but i think that i would probably not want my oldest to go alone till maybe 12 or 13.

I meet with my up with my sisters and there children also. I think its more fun that way for the kids to have someone too go with unstead of just there mom. Then I can hang out with my sisters for little since I don't get to see them all that much. I don't know when I would be willing to let my children to go trick or treating by themselves. I still have a few years before I have to worry about my kids asking me that.

To be honest I don't think a child is ever old enough to be sent out at night without a parent trick or treating. The rule in our household was once you became around 14 or so you were too old for trick or treating. You could participate by handing out the candy or entertaining the children who came to our door. And if under age 14 or so a parent had to at least be within eye sight. The world these days is a scary place. Even teens can be abducted and never heard from again, so its best to be cautious.

I don't have children, but my parents would never let me go trick or treating, as they say that it is nothing more than begging for sweets. I know that if you think about it, that's what it is, but it's not like it would just be us! The rest of the country are all doing it, so I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to do it as well! Anyway I'm an adult myself now, so I'm far too old to do a thing like trick or treating, until I have a child who I can take.

I do let my daughter go trick or treating. However, because she is still young, I always go with her. In the city we live in, it isn't safe to go alone. I have even told her that once she hits high school age, she can go with friends. I've learned that it's much more safe in number than by yourself. I will not allow her to go by herself until she is old enough to know the difference between a stranger and a friend.

It is very hard to know the difference between strange and friend. When the kids are old enough they can go with friends I agree. Just to little yet I think! Have a wondeful fall.

We only let our son go trick or treating at my husbands work. There are so many options now. The mall is such a warm safe place for trick-or-treating and the local churches do trunk-or-treats.

Trunk or Treat is where all the members of the congregation meet in the parking lot and do trick or treating out of their car. This way you know all of the people you are getting candy from, and you don't have to walk very far.
