What extra-curricular activities did you participate in when you were in school?

I've already posted a discussion about extra-curricular activities for your kids. This discussion is about you. When I was in elementary school, there were definitely not as many of these activities available to school students. I took some piano lessons for awhile but this was not school related. In Middle School (Junior High) I was involved in girls softball for a few years and I played the alto sax in the concert band. I never got into any major school sports. In High School I was in concert and Marching bands. Yes, I was a band nerd!. Band was a great experience for me. We learned how important each member was to the group. It was also the place where I met my best friends at the time. Band is full of really great, well behaved, and interesting kids. I LOVED those years. How about you? What were your activities? Did they help you in your future adult years? Did you have the tremendously exhausting schedule that kids today seem to have? Did your parents push you too hard? Did you do what THEY wanted you to to, or was it something you genuinely loved?

There really was not much when I was growing up for extra-curricular activities for kids and even now there is still not much in our area but I remember one year they had drama and I had signed up for that and from grade nine to twelve I joined track and field . None of these helped me as an adult but they were fun to do when I was younger . My parents never pushed for me to try out for anything and accepted when I did try out and participated in these events .

There definitely weren't as many activities for kids as there are now. We would get home from school, throw on our play clothes and play outside with our friends! I did nothing extra in elementary school. In middle school, I was a cheerleader for the football team and played girls basketball. In high school I was a baton twirler. That's all....I thought I was busy then, but looking at my kids now it is crazy busy. My parents never pushed me into anything. I did what I wanted.

I see that all the time..parents making their kids do sports and other activities. I always told my kids if they join an activity, they have to finish it out, but the next year they don't have to do it. I actually paid my son one year not to play soccer ~ he hated it the year before and it is so expensive. We made a deal and had a nice soccerfree summer.

I asked about parents pushing their kids into things because it seems there is so much of that happening these days. Life was simpler when we were kids! Thanks:)

In elementary school I was avidly into sports. Gymnastics, soccer, 3-Pitch, you name it I did it. As I got older and went to secondary school I did more intellectual things, like writing and reading clubs, music clubs and the yearbook committee. I still have the passion for writing and in high school I had a poem published in the yearbook. Maybe one day I wll post it here as it is very sentimental to me as I was quite young when I wrote it.

Hello rocketj1 Blimey where do I start. I think I did most of the activities in my junior school, recorder, band (I too am a band nerd!) drama, netball, gymnastics, choir. I think that by the time I moved up to senior school/high school I was much more interested in hanging out with my friends to be involved with any clubs though I did take clarinet lessons for while. I think my parents tried to encourage me but they certainly didn't push me.

Oh my gawd...high school days were a bomb...i would give an arm to actually go back and experience it all over again. Anyways, I had a field time trying out most of the activities there were in school. For sports, I was in tennis, volleyball, even tried out hockey....and there were the usual house practices of running, short putt, etc. Then, in Primary School, I was a Red Crescent member. Found that a little too slow for me, and Girl Guides weren't much of an interest for me so I decided to join my long time dream of being a police cadet. Mind you all, during that time, the Police Cadets in my high school were the Best among all other schools. We were always grabbing the top position. Then there were the usual English Society, Interact Club (which I had to quit after a while because cadets were taking up like a major of my time), and many others. My dad wasn't too happy that I was so involved in activities. He would rather I concentrate on my studies but hey...I was having so much fun, I just couldnt tear myself from it all. All in all, WONDERFUL years...=)

Most of the activities I did I asked my parents to sign me up for, or I signed myself up for. I took calligraphy classes, was on safety patrol, and played the flute in band in elementary school. I also did the school newspaper and was in a special math class. In secondary school I played the saxophone in band, was on the school newspaper, was a peer tutor and didn't do much else through school. I did volunteer for a couple of things if teachers asked, but mostly I hung out with my friends. Outside of school I did volunteer work, had a paper route, and babysat. When I got older I had a job on the weekends. Oh, and I did karate lessons and self defense lessons.

I was into drama and the school plays. I continued that into adulthood, and met the most awesome people, and had the most awesome fun!! Even when I worked backstage, I had fun and got to go to fun cast parties and made great friendships!

I never participated in anything after school. I was just never interested in any of it plus we lived quite a way from the school and I had to get the bus. My parents did not like the thought of me travelling when everyone was coming out of work and they could not come and fetch me. Plus I just wanted to get home, get my chores done and then be out with my mates.

When I was in Elementary and High School, i did join almost all the extra curricular activities our school could offer. I participated in almost all the programs in our school by dancing, singing, doing declamations and plays! Of course it helped boost my self esteem and be confident and proud about myself. My mom is such a stage mom, she had always been present to every event in our school, doing my make up for me and also for my peers!

In elementary school I participated in piano lessons, girl scouts, and church choir. In middle school I was in girl scouts and in the band playing the flute. I played the flute until someone stole it and my mom could not afford to buy another one. I later on in high school still participated in girl scouts but also ran track and danced with a drill team. I had a lot of fun in school. I already have my kids in gymnastics and karate. My son has expressed an interest in lacrosse or hockey. My daughter also wants to learn to play the guitar.

I'm not a particularly (bs?) sporty person, so I joined the school chorus... It seems like I had a hidden talent -yeah, right!- so now I sing all through the house and my family has just gone mad! jajajaja

hmm, in elementary school my extra-curricular activities were dancing, I joined as well in Journalism club. In high school however, I joined some dancing again. In my college, I didn't joined any club or have an extra curricular activities though, just focus my self in studying since I knew that the subjects will be more difficult and have no extra time for it. Yes, I remember that I have exhaustive schedule especially in elementary, I remembered that I have got a high grades in my extra curricular activities. No, I chose these activities on my own because I love and enjoyed doing it, my parents just support me and said it was alright as long as it didn't affect my studies.

When I was in grade school,it was band (flute and clarinet). In junior high, I was co captain of the girls volleyball team and in high school, I was involved in DECA (retail club for schools). I was school store manager and loved it. I think the involvement with DECA really helped me now in my adult life. I have worked retail for over 20 years and love it. My parents let me do things that I wanted to do, not because they made me.

during my elementary days, i used to participate in some extra-curricular activities... i was an active choir member of our school and a science club member... =) you know, its fun doing things that you don't normally do on regular basis plus, you can get to learn new things and meet new friends. =) the schedule was kind of toxic since you need to attend rehearsals and meetings after class but indeed, the learniing experience was rewarding..
